Oh Rich Strike, you ran a great race, but you are not a good boy …

I could have done without seeing Trump.

I called out to my husband, “EWWW! Now we need to buy a new TV!” :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

This one was anything but stealthy, wasn’t he? :grimacing:

Just curious, for the serious racing people on here, does RS have a reputation for being fractious? Does his pedigree?

Also do you think he benefited from the blazing pace set by Summer is Tomorrow?

Naughty boy!!

Anyone know how tall RS is?

Wow wow wow! 2ng longest shot in Derby history wins the race, Rich Strike not even in the race until yesterday, fastest first quarter in Derby history, Rich Strike bought in a claiming race, far outside post position, started dead last, masterful piloting through the pack, what a great Derby watch that was!!!

I think the other outrider was trying to get a lead or something to pull Rich Strike away so he could stop the attack. However, for whatever reason the original outrider waved him back. I can imagine how badly it could have turned out if Rich was pulled back, and the other outrider was the next target. I think the only way to really control him would have been two leads, and the outriders would have been far enough away to be safe.

However, when Rich got far enough away was when he went after the rein on the pony, and the pony again. The outrider really managed to stick to the pony, because that pony wanted to get away from Rich, for obvious reasons. I bet if he runs the other two Triple Crown races that every outrider, and pony will have shields. Or they’ll have two outriders, each with long lead ropes.

I loved watching the groom lead Rich Strike back toward the barn—he looked both elated and proud. :hearts:

I don’t know. I once had a mare run backwards and double barrel me. Luckily it was mid thigh. Otherwise I would have broken kneecaps or a pelvis. I had a wide berth but dang she was quick. Hard to believe a TWH could move that fast backwards. I had hoofprint bruises even after quick application of DMSO. (Yeh yeh I know) I could barely walk.

I’ve been in the hospital twice (long ago) from being kicked. Still rather be kicked. :slightly_smiling_face:

I know nothing about Rich Stike as an individual. Even rewatching his last (unimpressive) prep earlier today, he wasn’t on my radar.

But, he’s 3x2 Smart Strike, by Curlin out of a Smart Strike mare. That’s a pedigree of affable horses. Curlin is a big dumb love bug. Smart Stike wasn’t particularly mean by any stretch and isn’t known for aggression in his offspring.

The pace :100: is why he won. Nearly every time we have a pace meltdown, this happens. We haven’t had a total pace meltdown like this since we went to points instead of graded earnings.

This race was shades of Mine That Bird, shades of Animal Kingdom with the last prep on poly, shades of Giacomo…

That outrider should have beat the piss out of him. He is going to get someone killed

I meant one that keeps trying from multiple directions no matter how blocked. Maybe stealthy wasn’t the right word. Committed? Determined?

That was AWESOME. All day my brother in law via my sister had been texting me asking who I liked—I’m a terrible handicapper (had to tell her what that meant) but said I had sentimental reasons for liking Classic Causeway. After the race, BIL asked, “Why couldn’t you have sentimental reasons for liking Rich Strike??”

Totally threw off my exacta—this is the first Derby I have bet on, ever incidentally—but I didn’t care. As soon as Rich Strike came roaring up on the inside I burst out laughing and repeating, “Oh, this is f**king hilarious!”

Congrats to the connections. Oh, and regarding his after race antics: if my 23yro mini mare were a thoroughbred racehorse, this is precisely how she would act.

Yes, he was that! :flushed:

Amazing race and kudos to Rich Strike and his team.

But I can’t imagine what a monster he is going to be in the breeding shed. I feel sorry for his handlers, and even more sorry for his mares.

[Edited to fix a typo.]

I’ve seen some nasty consequences when a horse grabs the reins of another. You are right.

They ran the last half-mile in a bit over 52 seconds.

I don’t think the outrider was excessive in his actions at all.
