Kentucky Derby attire?

I figure you need to bring two outfits, one for hot weather and one for wet and cold. Both need to match the hat…

I think the most important thing is to wear comfortable clothes so that you can enjoy the derby and have a great time. Since they don’t have a strict dress code, it’s up to you to choose the clothes you want to show up with at such an event. Let us not forget that the Kentucky Derby is all about horse racing and not clothes  Although there are newspaper articles about the derby that feature many pictures of nicely dressed women and not a single pic of a horse

Thanks for the info! I plan to bring my purse, camera and $$.

I will wear nice but comfortable clothes![/QUOTE]

Perfect.

If you are sitting on Millionaires row/etc you need to dress to the nines. Otherwise dress for your comfort.

Real horsewomen don’t wear hats you know -unless they are to protect you from the sun or from injury. As a fashion statement, not so much.

That is total BS. I am a real horsewoman and I am wearing a hat. I don’t see how the two things are even remotely related. What I wear on my head has no bearing on my training abilities. When in Rome…

Easy there. Not my words but those of a central KY farm owner ( multigenerational) as to why she was bare headed at the Derby. There is a school of thought that nothing stamps you as a “tourist” faster than a frou-frou hat.

It is hard to do anything around a horse in a big floppy hat. Especially one with flowers. Yikes. LOL

Well God forbid I won’t be working around horses for a couple of days. A vacation if you will. I AM a tourist.

I guess these ladies never got that memo
Gai Waterhouse, probably the most successful female trainer ever, has trained 93 G1 winners. Don’t think I’ve sever seen her at the races without a hat on. One stylish lady she is…

Enjoy your time away!

That was weird… it changed letters in the quote…

Drdvm… wish I could look at all your lovely hat pics but my dial up won’t let me… the joys of living “out here”

Let’s see,

Little colorful dress, hat and will find comfy shoes. My host has reminded me 3 times about this.

The rain gear is coming though.

It’s tradional for ladies to wear hats (larger is better). Showing off is appropriate.

I managed to find an outfit that is both Derby appropriate and me appropriate- a sweet little black and white polka dot dress, black and white striped hat (sans frou but big) and some very comfortable little wedges from target. I am not convinced that I’ll be able to wear this whole get-up without interference as it’s calling for rain and we are without cover, but at least I have it.
