Hi Everyone!
We will be attending our first Kentucky Derby next weekend! I was wondering if anyone here could help me with what is acceptable to wear??? We are in the Grandstand bleacher seats Sec. 123.

a cute little summer dress will do the trick. you do not need to get dressed to the max. A dress, not a ball gown, is most likely a must. it doesnt need to be over the top either.
What about really nice/dressy slacks and a cute top? I’m from VT and just coming out of winter with my ghost white legs (not that I tan much in the summer either!).
That is fine. I’ve worn slacks a few times myself, mostly if I’m going to the backside, but I’ve worn them up front as well.
Oh good thanks! And if the BF wears slacks and a nice collared shirt he should be fine I assume?

NOOOOOOO! Don’t do it! You’ll be down South (sort of), where a lady wears a dress — and the horseplayers will not be looking at your legs, anyway! Add cute shoes you can walk and the kind of great hat you can’t really wear anywhere else besides a summer wedding. 
While I understand the whole “wear a dress” attitude, you’ll be fine in dressy pants if that’s what you want to wear. In the grandstand, you can wear whatever you want. In the grandstands, you will see everything from shorts/jeans to dressy dresses.
Most women will be in dresses, but it’s just because they can and they want to dress up and have fun. A hat isn’t a must, either, but what the heck? Have fun with it!
Comfy shoes are a must!!! If you are wearing heels, at least put a pair of comfy ballet flats or something in your purse. You will do tons of walking, and you will thank me later;)
What your husband is wearing sounds fine – again, though, make sure he wears comfy shoes.
Layers are good depending on the weather. Sunscreen might come in handy. I was in a box in the sun when Barbaro won, and we roasted.
I wish they’d put up a list on the website of what’s allowed to be carried in. I can’t find it this year. I’m going to the Oaks and was lucky enough to get Skye Terrace seats, but I’d still like to know what’s allowed. Security is tight.

Sorry, I’ve been to the Derby many times. Grandstand, Millionaires Row, backside, with owners, etc and nice slacks are just fine. No one will look at you funny or snicker.
Yes, and do wear comfy shoes. Hats are optional as well.
You might want to find out if you can bring food. I did a few years ago, and I was glad I had it. The lines are outrageously long, and food/drink is expensive.
Also, handicap the night before and place your bets all at once. Those lines are outrageous, too;)
Yes pants are fine,I’ll be wearing a pantsuit again this year,I like being comfortable.
No kidding on the comfortable shoes,it is a very long day with a lot of walking!
Also as someone mentioned find out what is allowed in your purse,two years ago my sunblock was confiscated!
Do wear a hat… not required, but sooo much fun!!!
I was there in 97 (I think)… great box seats (was connected to a horse running in the Derby)… I did wear a dress, great little number with a jacket…good thing because it ended up raining, and a beautiful hat to match!
Never got a chance to wear the hat again, but it makes for great dressup fun for my little girl!

I wore a summer dress on oaks day with heels.
Feet hurt the next day so I wore slacks and flats for the derby.
Big hats both days.

The big hat served a double purpose for me…it kept me from getting fried in the sun, as well as just having fun with it. The boyfriend was a lobster by that night. Whatever you wear, be comfortable. The long bathroom lines and bleachers suck if your sweating to death and your feet hurt. Have fun, its a great expirence!

We are down in the cheap seats with no cover, but I really want to wear a hat. And suggestions for materials considering it may rain?
Bumping post spam because I need input from those who have been in recent years. I already asked my hat question. Am I going to look like a loon if I do the nice dress & pretty shoes thing in the grandstand? I went to the derby in the early 90’s and sat in a similar location but have no memory of what folks were wearing- I was maybe 14. I don’t particularly care if I’m the only one wearing a dress but I don’t want to go black tie in a sea of business casual either.
Sorry for stupid questions- I’m excited. 
You will see it ALL at the derby. Dresses, skirt suits, pants, what ever. Most dapper gentlemen will look very “Bannana Republic” and most women will be in dresses and hats. A little wrap or sweater of some sort in case it is chilly or rains. Ponchos but no umbrellas, food in clear plastic, don’t remember rules on sunscreen but if I remember you can’t take it in, so put it on in car. It is sprintime in the south but the derby has been going to extremes in previous years. Have FUN
I will be wearing sensible shoes, classic dress pants. The dress thing is a summertime/Del Mar thing for me.
