We drove by the KHP campground today and were quite surprised to see that the primitive campground (AKA parking area for Rolex) was under major renovations (lots of earth moving). I hope no one was planning to camp in that part of the park as it’s closed. (PM me if you were!) Any idea where we’re all going to park later this week?
Wonder if they’ll borrow Spy Coast’s land as they did for WEG?
Spy Coast already developed that land now, it’s their young horse training center complete with an indoor arena.
Boo on the lack of planning and communication by KHP.
Yes saw that when we were there for Spring Bay HT a few weeks ago. My understanding is that the new construction is so that they can expand the campsites with water and electric. However, it does mean no primitive camping right now and also not sure what they plan to do for parking… I know they just built a new trailer parking lot back by the MMSC, so not sure if they’ll use that for competitors or allow them to park in the lot by the barns still and use it for car parking.
There was also road construction on Ironworks when I was there - all one lane in front of the park. Hoping that is resolved by the weekend!
There is a sign saying, “No Primative Camping”, so I am pretty sure it is closed. The road construction is still ongoing. No pavement yet
That’s crazy, has anyone called the park and ask them what the plan is? I’d like to share this info with my friends so everyone gets a heads up on parking and camping.
No worries, folks! We will still have both Rolex Kentucky parking AND primitive camping this weekend as usual. There will just be a bit of a construction site in the middle of it where a new trail head is going in for the Legacy Trail (an approx. 9-mile paved walking/biking path that extends into downtown Lexington). This will include bathrooms that will be a lot closer for the primitive campers in this general vicinity next year. The construction along Iron Works is for both the Legacy Trail extension, that will eventually extend up into Scott County and later into Georgetown, and a longer turn lane into the park. Please excuse our construction as it will add benefits for everyone in the future. Have a wonderful Rolex Kentucky!
Thanks to KyHorsePark for their response. A friend in the know gave me the details today. Parking will be partially in the campgrounds and partially on the back, unused polo fields. Gonna be a hike in!!
AND across the road near the soccer fields when everything else fills up!
Start lobbying for a tram ride in the parking to the entrance gate!! It worked to get the trams on Nina Bonnie Blvd. And, benches somewhere along all those stops. and around the shopping area.
I dropped my RV off last night and the campground was already half full. The FCFS primitive electric was probably 3/4th full. I made my reservation this morning for next year. We are all set.
I had my 15 year DD with me last night and it was pretty cool to see some of the riders in the warm up arena last night. Some others were unloading their horses off their trailers.
Talking about the primative no-hookups-at-all part of the KHP, Littleluck55. Glad you all are settled in though
