I guess my question, not being super familiar with eventing rules, are you allowed any type of combination or hackabit? That’s essentially what this is. it seems odd to interpret it as a three ring that has had its action modified when it is sold as a combination bit. Its action is a combination just like any hackabit.
He was not closely directly in front of me at the time he went down- it was the opposite end and - it was right after PD’s fall and his horse being loaded and taken to the vet. We saw ZB finish and everything seemed ok from what we could see- again he was across the vet box from us- but they brought out the tarps to put around his horse when he went down. He appeared to get up right away- we thought he might have just slipped and went down but as they led him into the vet box closer to us- he did not seem well.
This is an FEI specific rule (doesn’t apply to national competitions). I have never seen or heard anything about it being enforced before.
Poor horse.
Zach thought he was being funny pony kicking the poor thing through the finish line. I hope he learned his lesson.
Yes, sorry I realize it would be an FEI rule. But is the rule that you aren’t allowed combination bits? Or are they not recognizing this as a combination bit?
Actually the FEI site is incredibly unhelpful at answering my question. WTF is not applicable
No comment on this situation because I don’t know enough about FEI bitting rules, but Lisa Barry was in the 4* which is a different ground jury.
ETA: the bridle swap was also in the 4S, so same ground jury - thank you to @wanderlust for the correction. Different GJ to the 5L, which was the GJ that decided on Zach Brandt.
Actually though the leather strap does provide gag action.
Are the FEI stewards being more hardcore because of their drama with the FEI currently?
Katie was in the 4*, so same ground jury.
Ohhhh whats the drama? I’m entirely out of the loop these days.
They FEI didn’t renew their contract with the officials association. I can’t remember the proper names of the association off the top of my head so apologize but basically the officials wanted the FEI to have their back more. I guess they get a lot of flack from riders and even law suits when they make calls but the FEI hasn’t been supportive. There’s probably more to it but that’s just what I quickly remember. I’ll try and find an article.
Here’s more info, many issues happening:

I don’t think anyone knows! Combination bits have certainly been used in the past without issue. My understanding of the rule was that if you purchased it and used it as purchased it was legal (I rode a horse at the Training level in a homemade version that was semi inspired by this and my trainer pointed out that if I got to the point of doing a CCI it would not be legal.)
what a cluster! with this stuff plus The nitwits on the Olympic committee trying to cut eventing to ribbons, there will be very little sport in 20 years.
Link?
Wish someone other than Oliver had won. Bummer…
Cooley Rosalent’s owner is 92 years old, has been a long-time owner, and this is his first 5* win. That’s a nice story
Will any of those top 5 finishers run again before the Olympics?
It was a little insulting how little we saw of her
I doubt this, I’m no fan of Ollie but was eyeballing that mare hard in the jog and saw nothing.
