Is this on asphalt or ground? Entire event is stabled in tents 27 and 28. I know barns are on asphalt. Don’t see location on their map. TIA.
It’s on asphalt. They put tents in the parking lot above the Rolex.
Asphalt, they felt that the additional cost of stabling that stabling in tents required would balance people being closer to the rings.
Ick. Was afraid of that. Thanks for the information.
Get a piece of old carpet to put under your shavings (or whatever). Then ditch it in a dumpster.
My barn is usually in these tents (we actually like that they are removed from a lot of the activity, it seems like the horses get better rest), and we bring thick stall mats. We also turn the tent stalls into a ‘stall and a half’ which definitely feels comfier for the horses. Just some ideas if this is your first time in them and you are worried about comfort.
What a great idea!
Love this idea!
The KHP rents stall mats (if that is easier for you)
$100. Friend avulsed her brachial plexus moving them 2 years ago. Took a year to correctly diagnose. Don’t want to trigger her PTSD this year.
How do you turn them into stall and a half?
You would need to purchase two stalls and then move the divider.
This. If you are going with a group you can usually work it out- buy 3 stalls per 2 horses and move the dividers when you get there.
That’s more HJ style though, you guys love your tack stalls and grooming stalls and lounge stalls. Eventers are cheap. Give me a stall and I’ll toss my stuff in front of it in the aisle.
My farm just went to an unrated local show. Haul in horses Friday 10 am, most horses leave Sunday. Some left Saturday after showing. Four tack stalls. But there were 23 horses. Trailers were parked way far away. They had cables and locks for the tack stalls. My trailer went home with me. Trainer’s trailer went to her home. Trainer, grooms, and a few clients stayed at a local hotel. At that scale it is a convenience and security thing. Probably safer to have the saddles, bridles, martingales, etc…locked in a stall than locked in multiple cars at the hotel.
We did have a seating set-up and food set-up. Mostly snacks, cheese, beverages. Many of the people are there for 3 days ALL day. Some of the grooms are there from 9 am - 8 pm Friday, 5 am- almost 11 pm Saturday, 5 am- 6 pm on Sunday. No these are not professional grooms. These are generally clients that work off their board/lessons or work of a lease/half lease for their kid. This is our once a year big away show about an hour away from the home farm.
We have lots of children, many are too young to do their own horse care, with non-horse parents. Lots of hanging around with hunters.
The division my horse was in had 39 entries. Two jumping classes. At an average of 3 minutes per round before the hack, and that is assuming no ring conflicts with horses or trainers. Some horses did 2 divisions. It was brutally hot and humid in a sea of macadam. Having a place to sit, catch some shade, grab a drink, quick snack was a goddess send.
Grooming was in stalls. Lounge area in front of barn. One feed stall that was open fronted so could not be used as horse stall- small and not front wall or door. It is a quirk of the barn we were in.
For many hunters it is the scale.
When I camped at Fairhill yes we put tack in my locked truck or locked dressing room. it was in front of my stall prior to and right after the ride. Trunks with feed, bales of hay in front of stall. But it was a total of 5 of us not 23 horses. No 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 year old children that ride twice a week and do 2 week long camp sessions a year.
With eventing you know your ride times. Hunters ummmm…
Yes, hunters like their creature comforts but some of it comes from maybe you will ride around noon but really don’t get to ride until 3 or 4 pm.
Saw it done at the '96 Olympics
We used to use a couple of bales of straw - lay it in flakes and lay it like a mat. Shavings on top. A little more careful on cleaning just do the top at first.
I have done this. It can work quite well.
@GrayCatFarm the mats that Dever (at KHP) rents are small. Like 4’x3’ You need MANY to cover a stall.
Not that it’s easier to move but we bought 2 4’x6’ from the local TSC and covered damn near all the stall when we went for the Makeover in '15.
That said when we went for the Ky Summer shows we stabled off site at Six winters farm with turnout and shipped in daily. MUCH MUCH better for horse and I. Loved it. HIGHLIY recommend over macadam stalls
