Kicked! Another lucky:unlucky sort of thread (and bruise contest challenge)

That is an impressive bruise! Feel better soon.

I still have a dent from a Rico kick in the same area. And am also thankful it happened in the muscular part of my thigh, but at the time, I could not move my leg, so off in the ambulance I went. 2 days on crutches, but no super ugly bruising like you have - very weird.

ER stressed RICE. Rest, ice, compression, elevation.

Arnica! Lots and lots of arnica, topically and internally.

WOW!!! Those are some impressive bruises!!! I thought the one my pony gave me was bad! On a side note I went to the dermatologist for my yearly mole check while I had my gigantic “Africa” bruise and my Dr. almost freaked! She told me I should have been seen for it due to the chance of a blood clot. I still have scar tissue that makes me look like I have a saddle bag on that thigh to this day. My trainer coined it the Africa bruise due to its resemblence to the country. If you scroll through the album you can see its progression.

Oh my gosh, that is absolutely unreal! It looks like you’ve got a giant chunk of raw meat on your leg. I can’t believe how much it grew.

Wow, good one! Hope you feel better soon. Here’s my shot from getting kicked in the arm:

Artsy pattern courtesy of those heat wraps I was told to put on it after day three. Yeah, thanks.

Wow, I feel even luckier after reading some of these stories! Dang, but it hurts. Part of the problem is I can’t and won’t sit still, and haven’t had much of a chance to rest it – rode the stinker tonight and he was as sweet and perfect as he could be. I have vacation starting tomorrow and will get to rest it more.

Love the Africa bruise. The one on my butt looked like Australia upside down.

That is impressive.

Be careful, if the whole leg starts to hurt or one low spot, or start having trouble breathing, think clot and go get it looked at asap.

Horses playing around can “reach over and touch you” very easily, can’t ever be careful enough.

I bet it is hurting right now.
Hope you heal soon.

Not quite as impressive as the OPs picture:

If we can compare fractures and scars, my tib/fib fracture from April 2013 when I couldn’t stick a spin my young horse threw at me:

Good times… good times…

Oh jeez! Drawstraws, you have hardware inside and out. Ow-ow-ow-ow-ow-ow!!! I will not whine about my numerous accidents this year, large and small, on top of the two foot surgeries. I am totally cruising – I never want to see that kind of space-age equipment anywhere near my body.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday I’ll be hanging around with my in-laws, several of whom are afflicted with Factor V Leiden and can tell me all about the signs and symptoms of blood clots. I’ll be inquisitive!

And thank you all for the well wishes and concern. I also have really good beer, along with all of the ice, medicines and herbal potions.

Oh I feel ya Larkspur, right in the left thigh and knee! My whole leg is black and blue from a freak fall off a big bolting Irish TB. He went right, I went left into the wall, broke my crop and gouged a big chunk out of my knee. Surgery to drain the wound, full leg brace and crutches. Oh, and my thigh hurts like hell where I hit the wall. Sigh. Nudey pics and filleted knee pics are on my daughters phone so can’t share, but oh! How I feel ya Larkspur!

No, I don’t have a Game Ready machine but I have numerous ice packs in the rotation and I just fasten them on with an ace bandage. I also have a few different arnica products and I will switch to that eventually. Right now I am using Voltaren gel (double dipping on the NSAIDs), though the ice seems to help more than anything.

I have a picture of a bruise on my butt from a few years ago when I fell off my mare. I used to think that one was spectacular but now it looks tiny in comparison. I do have a permanent lump from that one, though it’s buried in my butt fat and no one knows it’s there except for me, Mr. Larkspur and, most recently, a sadistic massage therapist who thought she’d found a knot – um… NOT![/QUOTE]

Watch the dosage on those NSAIDS Larkspur. I only have one kidney left.

When I worked as BM, BO was kicked in the pasture by a placid lesson horse (who was not aiming for her) and had much the same bruise AND took a polaroid photo of it.

What is it about horsey people that we have no compunction in showing our horsey wounds, but are usually, otherwise NOT flashing the skin on film for posterity?

Hope you heal up, and am glad that your beastie had a good chit from CSU.

Not a kick - a fall. Landed right on my back like a bug. This is not even the most colorful that it got.

Impressive!

Yeouch! Just want to express my sympathy for all those suffering from big a&& nasty bruises like that. Feel better soon y’all.

Oh my!!!

And to think, it wasn’t even the Douche Bag that did it!

I think you jinxed yourself by telling me how good the baby was being just before all this happened

No pictures but my leg was run over when I fell off a horse who was in the midst of a panic attack. It was black from knee to toes and hurt like crazy. ER checked for fracture (it wasn’t) and gave me an ice pack I could secure to my leg which I wore 24/7 for the first few days. Four years later, I have some permanent scar tissue, swelling, and loss of sensation. Panic prone pony has been sent down the road to someone who could handle his issues.

My bruise wasn’t near as impressive, but the 160cc’s of fluid they drew out of the resulting hematoma was pretty awe inspiring to the medical staff! And it’s back. And bigger.

I don’t have pictures of either of my “best” bruise situations.

  1. Landlord doesn’t handle his horses so they are pretty unruly. One spring I had worked with a mare to get her halter-broke. Then she went out to pasture for the summer. When she came back into the barn in the fall, my landlord came to me and said “I’ll give you $25 if you can get a halter on her”. I walked into the stall with a smug attitude (you KNOW nothing good ever comes from that!) as if the horse would remember her lessons from months ago. THWACK! Double barreled, hoof print bruises in the middle of each thigh. A matched set! I can’t even say “but I got that halter on her!” because I was launched into the stall wall and had to crawl out.
  2. Poor judgment with a bunch of horses turned out for exercise in the arena one winter. “Shooed” one of them who was getting too close to me, and she took exception to it. I now have a cleft chin! There was what appeared to be a crack in my jaw as well, but the xrays weren’t clear enough to confirm – I was asked to come back in for an MRI or catscan or whatever would be appropriate, I forget. I asked if it would change the treatment and was told no. So I only guess the jaw was cracked. That was a spectacular bruise, right before a business trip and a trip home for the holidays to see my family. Colleagues got the true story; parents and siblings got a, um, lie. “Kicked in the chin by a horse” would not have played well at home.

No photos I was 16 and mortified enough.

Growing up living with a boarding/training/breeding facility in you back yard and I can’t say I was always down with the safety patrol. Led with lead ropes around necks , no halters , grabbed ponies by their manes etc Got tired of my mother admonishing me to “do it right” I put a halter and chain lead on my often fractious mare to go from stall to paddock.
Proudly yelled the famous last words 'Look mom she’s got a halter on are you happy now" Walked her in turned her around closed gait went to un clip chain and she spun around and kicked me square in my sternum right about my chest.
Didn’t knock me down , kept my wind. Screamed like a banshee I’m told (don’t remember). Walked away with a broken sternum complete with bonus bone fragment and a horse shoe shaped bruise complete with visible marks where her shoe nails where. Which progressed over the next days to a huge 3rd boob hematoma , my Total Recall moment.

Wanders in with a handful of pics, checks out the current contenders and takes pics away again, while actually counting my lucky stars that I have nothing to compete with what has been posted…
