Kicked! Another lucky:unlucky sort of thread (and bruise contest challenge)

I wish I had thought to take a picture when I came off a lesson horse a few years ago  It was my first fall and I only had time to think “hands up” so I wouldn’t break my wrists. I’m told I did an impressive mid-air twist so I would come down on my butt.

My backside from the knees to the middle of my back looked like your leg. I could only get in bed on one side and if I wanted to lie on my other side I had to roll like a crocodile. It took me a week before I broke down and went to the Dr. so I could get the super Ibuprofen.

I don’t know if I’m a bad person, but I admit that this is almost as fascinating as a pus thread.

I was kicked in the side of my right breast when Vee was still trying to see if I would react like his previous owner when he kicked (i.e., immediately turn him back out in his pasture to eat grass with his buddies). Vee has since learned that his behavior was a grevious tactical error.

It turns out that breast tissue absorbs force pretty darn well. It’s the only time my generous busom has ever been useful.

I take it the resulting CTJ meeting made your injury seem minor in comparison? I hope so, anyway!

Vee quickly realized that I am made of sterner stuff than his previous human.

I was a sergeant in the Army in my younger days. Vee kicking me was simply his way of telling me that I have failed him by not giving him enough opportunities to discipline his mind and condition his body.

Bumping for more war wound stories and to whine that my leg still hurts like a bitch!

I got one:yes:. Not a kick but damnnn.

I was in high school. I was boarding my horse in a neighbor’s pasture. They had a pony…13.2 ish hand gelding?. I was riding my horse (15.2 ish hands) and the pony kept coming after her. Usually, I rode in peace…gelding hadn’t before bothered us while I was riding.

I was relatively new to horse ownership. Well mare was in heat and gelding? wanted her…bad. I assumed being gelded he would have no thoughts of such things…naivety on my part. When I wouldn’t let him near her, he went around from her left side to her right side and grabbed ME by the leg…meaty part of my thigh. OMG that hurt like you know what. He pulled me off of her! If I hadn’t hurt so bad, I think I would have grabbed an ear and bit it off:mad:.

I got a fist sized hematoma and it took forever for it to resolve.
It didn’t leave a lump (after about a year) but darn it was painful at the time. Evil pony.

Mine was probably the dumbest way to get a bruise. I was riding a friend’s mare in a big arena and the mare decided to canter rapidly sideways. (don’t remember the circumstances - if after a jump or …) I figured she wouldn’t be stupid enough to run into the fence. Yeah, right. My leg was between her and the fence like a protective airbag for her. So bruise on outside of entire thigh. Finished the ride using a little more common sense. Quick application of DMSO made aftermath tolerable.

Stupid teenager moment: when I was 16, I had the brilliant idea of making one of the young horses at the barn run for pictures. I slapped her on the rump with both hands and she “slapped” me back-- in the ribs and across both thighs. I cracked a rib (I think. It hurt like hell to move, breath, cough, sneeze, etc but I refused to tell anyone of my idiotic act therefore no visit to doctor.) and had the mother of all bruises across both thighs. I could still see the outline of the bruises if my skin got hot or cold until I was in my early 20s. I really have no idea what I was thinking but I definitely deserved what I got.

Had a few horse related bruises myself over the years. The strangest one was when I was shooing my guys out of the barn in the morning, walking behind them when one spied an “attack” branch, you know… the ones that fall off trees during the night and lie in wait for unsuspecting horses. Of course he threw himself back in horror, hit me and knocked me flying sideways and I landed on top of the feed bins. I had some pretty impressive bruises all along one side but nothing broken thank goodness. I’ve never made that mistake again. Came across this the other day though. Docs are now not recommending ice for injuries, studies show that it apparently can slow healing http://www.caringmedical.com/sports-injuries/rice-why-we-do-not-recommend-it/.

Thank you for the article. That is really very interesting! MEAT instead of RICE. Makes a lot of sense. Movement seems to be the answer to so many problems. Just keep moving!

I’ve often wondered about the logic behind decreasing blood circulation to an injury. It seems that there are some inflammatory responses that need to be reversed (thinking about cellulitis in a horse) and others that are serving a valuable purpose.

I stopped using the NSAIDs about a week ago and started using heat instead of ice several days ago, and I have been moving and stretching my leg more. It’s finally starting to feel a little better today.

I had a lesson today and my trainer was noticing my floppy left leg (and so was my horse).

Thanks again to everyone for sharing your stories! Ddasheq, I love how the horse “slapped you back” - ha! I’ve been on the receiving end of such corrections myself.

Might try this `` if it still hurts in the morning ~

Yesssss!

I love you!!!

“Impressive” just does not cover it. I need to find a thesaurus (preferably in several languages)
