Kid saddle for W-I-D-E pony

Mom has a granddaughter and a pony, and just needs a saddle.

I took a quick trip through eBay and saw several cute little saddles that were pretty reasonable. My concern is whether they will actually fit this pony. She’s built like a horse with short legs. She wears horse size harness (not in the top hole :lol:).

Last winter I picked up a cheap little huntseat saddle. It doesn’t fit her at all, it’s way too narrow. A friend got on her last week and used his western saddle and it fit her fine. The toddler would be swimming it though.

Are there any red flags I should look for? ‘Pony bars’ kind of scared me. This is a saddle for pony rides a couple times a year, not anything serious.

Since you already have a larger saddle that fits the pony, you can make an adult saddle fit a kid with a rolled up towel behind the kid, or here is the same idea commercialized:

They also sell special fenders/stirrups that are very short and hang from the horn, for very small kids to be able to use a big saddle:

No more than you would use a kid’s saddle, you may get by using a bigger saddle and letting the kid kind of swim in it, if it is not a safety issue.

Pony rides “a couple of times a year” are the leadline type and so most any saddle ought to do it.

My daughter has a 10 inch saddle that fits her mini horse ok and our big TB great. It will even fit the big round lazy lesson horses. I will find the link. Plus it wasn’t outrageously priced and it is blinded out like my princess likes.

That us my son’s saddle, it fits the big TB and the Draft cross as well.

Honestly a good used kids western saddle will most likely fit since it is fairly common for the kids to ride older full bodied full size horses anyway. Pony bars. Never had them and I never will.
