Kitty with tummy issue

My cat Theodore came from a hoarding situation. When I adopted him it said he had a history of diarrhea and fecal float was negative. However, he sporadically has diarrhea. Additionally fecal floats have been negative, although he did have tapeworms and was treated for that. The vet suggested trying metronidazole. I’m hoping this will help the issue, but I am beginning to suspect dietary intolerance.

Any other thoughts or suggestions? I’ve already dewormed him with pretty much with the entire spectrum of drugs. Heartgard, pyrantel, and praziquantel, and fenbendazole. He does get outside and eats stuff like rats, mice, frogs, lizards, etc. He’s a great hunter. Currently he is back in lockdown due to incredibly hot weather and the fact we had to take down the cat pen to remove a tree.

Maybe try chicken and rice? I just don’t know.

His appetite and weight are good.

I’ve had enough gut issues–including diarrhea–in kitties resolve with famotidine that I’d try it here, too, even in the absence of other more typical ulcer symptoms. I do 2.5 mg BID for a “normal” sized cat, but speak to your vet for confirmation.

If that doesn’t do it, I’d go straight to z/d for 4-8 weeks. Better than futzing around with novel proteins that may or may not be ones that set him off. If improvement, then swap over to likely novel protein, but the hypoallergenic diet first should give you a clear answer.

Good luck! Poop problems are awful.

I’d take him off fish. One of my girls get’s tummy issues on anything fishy.

Have you tried probiotics?

I have done the novel protein elimination diet (Rayne Rabbit), but it is hard with a farm cat, and I think it took 3 months to see results.
