Thanks everyone for the great ideas. I will definitely try to get it on video for the vet, I would never have thought of that! I am going to try to watch her being ridden so I can hopefully see for myself what is going on. I really appreciate everyone’s help.
Have definitely seen this. My older guy does it when walking on the buckle - if he’s working with his weight over all 4 feet, he doesn’t stumble. When he’s daydreaming and heavy on the forehand, he will. Also know a pony who does it, and has done it, fairly regularly over the years. Pony most likely has something going on in that front foot and has an old tendon injury, both probably contributing to the occasional moment when he moves funny and says “ouch.”
I know this is a very old post but was wondering if the OP ever got a diagnosis?
BlueMerle, we never did get a definitive diagnosis. The problem faded away, and I lost the lease on the horse shortly after that. I left that barn because I ended up buying a horse and keeping him at another barn. I’ve since lost touch with that mare. I hope she’s well - I worry about her. I tried to buy her but the owner wouldn’t sell. Later I learned the owner lost her job and sold the mare on.
