Kudos for George Williams

If any of you ever have the opportunity to work with George Williams, JUMP ON IT! He did a clinic in my area last weekend and, as a gift from my husband, I was able to ride in it both days. George is insightful, encouraging, and has multiple exercises to address every problem imaginable. It seemed as though he conveyed three hours worth of information in each 45-minute lesson. As my husband said, “I’ve never seen you work so hard before,” and my body screamed that a few times. Whenever, I was on the verge of begging for a walk break, George would say something encouraging and send me off on a new pattern that challenged my horse and me in the best possible way. We worked hard, but we now have so many more things we can work on at home. His exercises are logical, and he explained every aspect clearly. There are a number of people I’ve ridden with who I learned a lot from and really liked but, when telling other people about them, I had to issue some caveats (e.g. abrasive, sarcastic, doesn’t want to work with certain types of horses or lower level riders, etc.). With George, there are no caveats. He gives 110% no matter what level rider, what breed of horse, or anything else. Every bit of information he conveys is done in an encouraging tone of voice. My one and only regret was that my schedule didn’t enable me to watch all of the other lessons.

Lucky you, thanks for the report!

great report- does he still use the KM stepping exercises? Always fascinating.

All I’ve ever heard about him has been good. My veterinarian learned to ride from him when they were kids. He is high quality old school.

Pictures.
better still video.
please.

enquiring minds want to see

I’ve heard ton of good things about him and I’ll try to travel to audit one of this clinics hopefully soon.

Hey Fiona – Hi! I have a bunch of pictures on my FB page but don’t know how to post them here. I also can’t find your email or I’d send them. So, email me!

BelgianWB, Definitely go audit!

He is my favorite clinician - I try to ride with him 3 or 4 times a year - there is a barn in my area that hosts him regularly. I’ve ridden with half a dozen mid to big names over the years, and I stick with George now.

One of the best things about him is that he is super flexible - everything from helping on test prep for an FEI rider to the basics for a young horse, I’ve seen him do it all in a single day. In addition, he’s got a wealth of experience so he’s got more than one way to get to what you want - so if you or your horse doesn’t “get it” - he’ll try something else until you do.

Unlike some who I have ridden with - he is understandable to the audience, but he does not play to the audience to the detriment of the rider. Never seen him even glance at his cell phone during a ride (also unlike a couple clinicians that I have seen). Discreet - I had a question that I did not want broadcast to the audience, and we stopped at the far end of the ring and he turned his mike off so we could talk briefly.

Last month he was very fond of the phrase “One more time”. Which absolutely does NOT mean that. You think you’re going to die - but you’re pretty sure you can do once more - next thing you know it’s been 10 more times and you never saw it coming. And you survived.

Which speaks a lot to his character!! I can’t stand the “grandstanders” and avoid them like the plague.

Hm. Respectful of the rider AND respectful of the horse.

I’ll be auditing one of his clinics tomorrow.

Awesome. Thanks for letting us know how it went.

My dear friend rode with George Williams a few times in various clinics and always loved how he taught. She was riding a horse with some baggage and he really helped her understand what she needed to do to ride through that.

rothmpp, I cracked up at your comment about “one more time” because that was my experience exactly, and I actually teased him about it.
