Well. … Melanie incorrectly identified Boyd as someone else and completely misread an incident when a rider was having a runout. I don’t know why they can’t get an Eventer to do it.
The commentators on the NBC Sports livestream and BBC are far superior to Mr Moss and Miss Melanie. There are so many complaints about them each time the Olympics come around…amazing that they haven’t been replaced.
UGH! I turned the sound OFF so I wouldn’t have to listen to Melanie. They could SURELY find someone better than her. Just because she knows that you ride on the back of the horse doesn’t mean she knows anything else.
Unfortunately, I will have to listen to her drivel if I want to watch the freestyles (at least for Grand Prix I can turn the sound down) for dressage.
Wow I think MST is pretty darned good at explaining what needs s’plainin’ to those who don’t know. She knows her stuff re: SJ and riding in general and has a way of saying things that would make sense to the uninitiated.
I also think she has a great voice for it.

I think it is safe to say MST probably knows more about riding a horse than the collective BB. And while three day may not be her area of expertise, the job of a commentator in that role is to explain it to a layperson. It’s NOT a skill most experts in a field can lay claim to.
If you want a more nuanced commentator, we have the technology for that. That’s what the live feed (or BBC) is all about. Problem solved.
MST has sucked for years. No one who knows dressage likes her. She’s HORRIBLE. The Brits are SO MUCH better. She doesn’t just dumb it down, she drinks the koolaid when people feed her a line about why something happened. Oh, and the last two Olympics she was an a**hat to the official commentator for the network.

The NBC Sports livestream commentators are awesome, but I think MST has improved quite a bit since previous Olympics.

They sounded like they were announcing golf, and twice she called Charisma a liitle mare (as in, "I loved that little mare ")
I expect more from someone who has a national stsge.
Yep, every Olympics we ask someone to have a long talk with MST and tell her to just STOP because she’s not doing eventing or dressage any favors at all. She should have stepped aside years ago. She must have friends at NBC.

I didn’t watch her for that long since I had already watched all day at work, but if I had heard her refer to Charisma as a mare I would have changed my opinion. Anyone who is commentating for the Olympics should at least know something about the last horse and rider to defend their Olympic title successfully, especially since there was a good chance that MJ and Sam would do the same in Rio.

She is probably making a nice salary and getting a trip to the Olympics for free so why would she step down from such a position? Probably has a long term contract too.
I loved listening to Steve Hadley on the live stream. there are very few commentators I can stand but I always look forward to his input on the GCT streams. I’m glad he’s doing the Olympics. There should hopefully be some “crackin’ good rounds” in the show jumping!

I don’t love MST but she ultimately got on my nerves a lot less than Randy Moss, who will NOT be quiet for more than a few seconds at a time. Seriously, he would not SHUT UP even as placement-deciding rounds were in progress, mostly saying inane things.
I finally used the mute button – hated not being able to listen for rails being tapped and the horses’ cadences, but my irritation immediately dropped after I hit mute.
