Well, they’re definitely more knowledgeable than this, albeit not as entertaining.

I just saw this one, from AnneFS’s Olympics thread in OT:

At least one of whom said he had actually walked the course.
He said he walked it 3x.
I’m going to write NBC and suggest they do the network commentary; I hope others do as well.
They are also educational, IMO much more than MST. They just do it in a calm, matter-of-fact way and don’t repeat themselves over and over again.
I also think that the two most accurate comments on here are that the problem is that NBC thinks all equestrian events are the same and therefore a one-size-fits-all equestrian is what’s needed. Nope. And the second is that MST I’m sure has friends at NBC. She is simply not a top-notch commentator. It’s not an easy job, but the Olympics should have the best.

Peggy, that was hilarious!
At least he had the b@!!$ to admit he wasn’t that familiar with the sport. If we can’t get Kyle and Hadley to do the NBC eventing commentary next time, let’s try to get this guy.
Well, that sailing commentary was a joke by an Irish comedian, it’s not a real commentary. Although, yeah, I’d listen to him narrate any sport!
hate to be a Debby Downer here, but it won’t do to ask for better. We are lucky to have what we do. Think of all the cameras it takes to do the xc. I mean even for the dressage, they must have 5-6 cameras. But for eventing, they have to be moved to a wilder area. With all the uproar about turning a 3 day into a jumping derby in a field what will be the point. They want to drop us as it is.
What I remember her goofing on in '92 was xc. A rider had been pulled up somewhat off in the distance. He/she was stopped, and then walked a bit, and may have dismounted. I am also quite sure that they had already announced a fairly bad fall, further up the track.
MST kept going on and on about how they must have done something wrong, or withdrew or been eliminated. She may have done heroic things in the 84 Olympics I think. My goodness!
If she has been on retainer for this long, you would THINK she could be bothered to peruse the Chronicle to see who was hot, and who was not. You would think she might watch a bit of video from Rolex, or the Big Dressage competitions that are certainly available on the internet. Even if she had to pay for them, she could frank it off of her taxes!
She was raised in pony club I think I remember, so there really isn’t any excuse for her not to know.
I absolutely loathe Melanie Smith Taylor. Why can’t NBC get someone interesting and entertaining who actually knows something about dressage - like Pam Stone! People will remember her from Coach and non horsey people can relate to her humor. She’s a great communicator and lacks that haughty tone that MST seems to have perfected.

Sure it will. It would even save NBC money to pay for all those cameras in Eventing.
I’m sure NBC has to pay for the use of the Steve Hadley/John Kyle duo. So just use them and save the salaries of MST & Randy Moss.

Ummm… I think on xc the cameras were a world feed provided by Brazil, not by each country. Very similar to many other sports. The TV feeds are world feed, still cameras, you can see the cast of hundreds with their fancy cameras
Even better. I said that about the cameras because Larksmom had written: “Think of all the cameras it takes to do the xc.”
I may be wrong, but I think that NBC may do all of the camera work for all of the events. They then provide it to others.
Why can’t NBC just use the same commentary from the live stream?
If she only did show jumping, which is her sport, none of us would have a problem with her. The problem is with NBC. They seem to think equestrian events in the Olympics are all the same. Someone needs to educate them and explain that it’s like having a race swimmer (think Phelps) do the commentating on diving or synchronized swimming.
This is my problem with it. It simply wouldn’t be hard to get someone knowledgeable about each individual disciplines and still have them speak in terms an average viewer could follow, while being less off-putting to the knowledgeable viewers.
That said, I’m THRILLED to have the live stream of everything and the fantastic commentary there, and might be slightly addicted . . .
One thing MST didn’t do was call one of the jumps a “triple bra.” Oh, well, better a slip of the tongue than a slip of the hoof.
