I had my dog with me today when I stopped by my mother’s house. I went to help her in the basement and my dog was sniffing every square inch. My mother said “she can’t hurt anything down here” I said “but can anything down here hurt her?” to which my mother said she didn’t think so. Moments later we heard her crunching something and it turned out to be a block of mouse poison. On a Sunday of course. Luckily, my mother still had the packaging and there was a toll-free number on it for emergencies that was NOT the animal poison center. My hopes were not high since it was Sunday, but I actually got through to a person, explained that my dog ate about 1/2 of a block and gave her additional info (number/active ingredient from the package, weight of dog, etc). She put me on hold for a minute to do some calculations, and determined that my 60 pound dog would have had to eat 1.92 blocks to be problematic, and to just keep an eye on her. She also said this poison can be cumulative so if she gets into it again, to let the vet know. I got a case number and an excellent, knowledgeable operator. I’m impressed. My first call was my vet’s office, just in case, my second call was the emergency vet who told me to call animal poison control, then I tried the number on the bucket and got specific advice at no charge. It’s been 8 hours since she ate it, and there seem to be no issues.
Oh my god so scary! I’m glad you had so much support from Tomcat and you caught it just in time! Keeping my fingers crossed.
How scary! I hope you don’t have any issues.
Yikes! Hope doggo stays okay. And thanks for the info about that brand of poison. I will add to my files of useful info to have in the ER.
How is your dog today?
That would be so scary! I’m so glad she didn’t eat any more and I hope she’s doing well today as well.
Thank you for sharing this! I hope your dog is doing well.
That is so scary! I never thought about it being something a dog would want to eat, but, of course, they make it palatable.
It appears to be very commonly ingested by dogs. (If the number of people asking about it on the vet group on facebook is a good example of what is happening out there in the world.)
When my dog got a piece that my FIL had put out I rushed her to my vet and they induced vomiting until it was all out and put her on a round of Vit K.
FIL had no idea the dogs would eat it. So thankful I saw her eating it!
I hope you called your vet today just to be sure no matter what the person on the phone advised.
There are different types/ingredient products so it sounds like your dog ate a different product than what the OP’s dog ate.
We’ve never used poison on the farm because of birds of prey, barn cats, and dogs. But that was because we were worried about them eating the mice that had ingested it. Never thought about them going after the bait. Thanks for the warning!
Poison is something I would want to be sure of no matter who makes it. We use Tomcat to kill mice if needed and I would get a vet opinion no matter what.
My dog ate " one bite bar" . My vet said " of course they are tasty. How else do you think they can get the mice/ rats to eat it"? That was enough for me.
We use PVC bait stations( shaped like an upside-down T) that protect all other critters from getting at it.
Happened to one of my dogs. Vet had me give them hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting (works like a charm) and then vit K. Didn’t even require a vet apt.
You may have missed my point. TomCat makes bait blocks with different products in them. Your dog may have eaten one “bite bar” of something that one bar is a serious problem. Where it sounds like the OP’s dog ate a different product.
Now if you do not know specifically what product your dog ate, then yes, run to the vet’s office immediately and they will treat assuming the worst case scenario.
But the OP called with all the information, they did the right thing.
There’s a poison bait with No Secondary Kill - it induces hemmorhaging, so if something eats the poisoned mouse, it does not suffer the same fate.
I need to get this for my barn, where the damn mice now come out when they hear me mixing grain
I don’t have a barncat, but do have passerby cats.
They just don’t stop by often enough.
I may be wrong, but after seeing a mouse die from the neurologic poison, internal bleeding may be a “kinder” death.
@Mango20 Hope your dog is okay
You missed my point. I just advised the OP to not take Tomcat’s advice as gospel. It is always the best thing to contact your vet as well just to make sure.
If it kills rodents it can do damage to your pet. Do as you will. I was just offering advice. Take it or leave it.
It’s been 26 hours and my dog is still doing fine. My parents don’t have any pets so my mother just tossed bait blocks in spots in the basement with no protection other than being in a corner or slightly hidden. I was not aware of that until I heard the crunching.
Although it was my first thought, this particular type of Tomcat says on the package NOT to induce vomiting. My mother didn’t have any hydrogen peroxide in the house and it would take 1/2 hour go buy some. As far as why my dog ate it, we found that the packaging said it was peanut flavor. This particular dog will eat just about anything, though.
There are different active ingredients within the brand. The operator asked me for the EPA number from the package, then confirmed the active ingredient before continuing. My vet agrees to just keep an eye on her.
Glad she seems to being doing well.
