Ky horse park shows 2021

Our country is going to hell in a hand basket!
Phelps media just sent out RESTRICTIONS that ONLY the official show photographer Shawn McMillen may be on the grounds taking pictures HOWEVER, if you apply to take pictures and pay an OUTRAGEOUSNESS FEE they MIGHT consider letting you take pictures.
THIS IS COMPLETELY ANTI CAPITALISM AND AMERICAN. SHAME ON YOU!!

Hey, so, there’s a myriad of issues at play here. I admit I was I little surprised at the release, and more surprised that Phelps is in charge of bestowing said credentials, but let’s maybe take it easy on the hyperbole. Official Show Photographers do need some sort of protection if we expect them to continue lugging their trailers & gear & staff all over the country capturing every horse, every round, every ring, which the pros like SMP & ARP & others do.

May I ask what the fee is? I regularly photograph our clients at KHP so figuring this will affect me.

Found the prices… this is rather steep :eyes:

Rates and regulations for private, freelance photography during the 2021 Kentucky Horse Shows season are as follows:

  • Individual weekly passes: $700 per photographer
  • $250 for second shooter for the same business
  • Spring/Summer Pass can be purchased for $3,500 per photographer
  • Second shooter (and thereafter) of the same business is $1,200 per photographer for all six weeks (Kentucky Spring Horse Show, Kentucky Spring Classic, Kentucky Summer Horse Show, Kentucky Summer Classic, Bluegrass Festival and the KHJA Horse Show).

Pricing is INSANE

F the KHP and the horse they rode in on !!!

Am I missing something? It reads to me that this is for other photography businesses, not individual people wishing to take some pix of their friend riding, or their trainer on their horse, etc.

They aren’t banning someone from taking pictures, they are addressing photography BUSINESSES, they are protecting the “show photographer”. Some shows don’t let second pro photographers take pictures at all and will remove them. Usually it is in the prize list.

Every show has this rule. You can take your own photos but you cannot sell them.

I believe WEF was charging $1k/week, and their spring series appears to be $500 week for all photogs (no discounts for second shooters).
