I used to work at a layup barn for Standardbreds. The trainers there called them hobbles. I’ve never heard them called hopples. Interesting…
It’s normally pronounced hobbles, spelled hopples. Don’t ask me why, I’ve scratched my head over that many a time.

Agreed. Usually pronounced hobbles, spelled hopples. My SO who has raced from the east coast to the west coast (in both Canada and the US) says hobbles, so I know it’s not just the locals saying it that way.
