lab coats to show dogs??

I know nothing about fox hunting or dog showing. But I am a professional scientist.

I was looking at the June 19 issue of COTH again…the pictures from the Virginia Hound Show. The people showing the dogs look like they are wearing laboratory coats. Am I right or wrong? Why do they wear white coats rather than hunting attire?

a curious COTHer,
j.

Yep…lab coats.
In the horse show world they are called dusters…not to be confused with the long western dusters of the movies.

Trivia for you… hounds (as in fox hounds) are always called hounds rather than dogs. A Dog (hound) is a male and the correct term for a female hound is bitch.

To keep their clothes clean. They also put biscuits in their pockets.

There is a bit of difference in the ‘lab coat’ turnout for shows.

English Hounds are shown with the handlers wearing bowlers, not hunt caps.

Huh. Thanks guys! Very interesting - it looked like a picture of a bunch of veterinarians showing their dogs. Thanks for the trivia, Mach Two. i know nothing about fox hunting or hounds but I always enjoy the COTH hunt roster issue and the hunting sections. I had wondered why the dogs were pretty much never referred to as ‘dogs’. Now I know. Thanks, too, JSwan! I will now look for headgear in the pictures when I cruise through the dog show ads.

Kennel coats. (should actually be buff)

Here are my pictures from the Foxhound Show if you wanna see them.

Schmoozers!

So I see JSwan and HuntersRest cuddling up to Jim Meads in picture #80 of Lex’s pics…hmmmmmmm…such big schmoozers!!! Yeah sure, picture with the famous people…so did anyone catch ME in the backround anywhere?:wink:

We couldn’t get past the massive throngs of screaming Wateryglen fans so I’m afraid you probably aren’t in any of the pictures except perhaps as an anonymous elbow or tuft of hair. :stuck_out_tongue:

I needed to say thanks, guys! Lex, your pictures are fantastic. Are you the professional “show” photographer for these shows? Do you have dogs in the classes, too? How nice to see a picture of Jswan and Huntersrest. Of course, it is all made worse by the fact that I really want a dog…and now I REALLY want a dog. Who is the woman who won reserve championship? Are you in any of these, Lex?

Happy Peterborough Royal Foxhound Show day!

Just thought I’d mention it as we’ve been talking about hounds. Wish I could be there! Wouldn’t it be nice if they had webcams for Peterborough like they do for the big horse events? Sigh!

Thank you. It took me a long time to go through all the stuff I shot and select the right pictures to put up there. It’s not that most of them weren’t right, it’s just that many of them were not as straightforward in that you’d look at some of them and wonder what was going on. I had nothing to do with the event. I just showed up, took some pictures, socialized, and enjoyed myself. I know how you feel about wanting a dog. As soon as I’m ready to get one, I’m off to get it. I really want a foxhound though everyone keeps telling me it’s a bad idea because of their nature. Other than their propensity to mark things, which is a hound trait that every hound and Beagle I’ve worked with seems to have, I don’t really know of anything that one could consider negative about them except perhaps their energy level but that’s exactly what I want in my dog.

I don’t really know much about that extremely photogenic woman/girl/teenager/I have no idea what she falls under who won the Reserve, other than she is the daughter of someone high up in the hunt she was representing and she is also an Eventer. I walked by her at Seneca Valley HT when she was coming from the XC area and recognized her after doing a double-take. The dog’s name was Jackson if I recall correctly. He is a beautiful specimen and very friendly. Definitely the kind of dog you’d want to have as a friend on the farm.

It’s rare to find a photo of me anywhere. I’m always behind the camera taking beautiful photos of other people and things. I got some great photos of various animals from my last trip to the zoo in DC that I’ll be posting shortly in my Webshots. You haven’t seen cute until you’ve seen a Prairie Dog with food in it’s paws or a pair of Golden Lion Tamarins peaking out at you from their little nesting box.

One visit to hounds and it will make perfect sense to you why you’d want to wear something full length to cover up your clothes. Of course in the show ring they’d be nice and mannerly (it is to be hoped) with no muddy feet jumping up and dirtying/tearing your clothing. Plus just working in the kennel, cleaning, medicating, feeding…kennel coats are a great idea.

Oh my goodness. That would explain my neutered rescue hound’s behavior! We got him at about 1 year of age; there’s something else besides hound in Lance’s woodpile, but we aren’t really sure what. Definitely mostly hound, though - he has the body shape and it’s clearly a hound head/face.

The marking thing is really the only negative about this dog. He will mark if I take him to visit somewhere, and if we are not careful, he will mark PEOPLE! Very embarrassing!

But he has the sweetest, most people-oriented personality and I can do anything with him. By “people-oriented”, I mean that he’s more interested in the owners than the other dogs at the park, and on walks he’ll whine when he sees a person - wants to stop and say “hi”. Are they usually such love sponges?
