Laboratory Nightmare at UK

I’m speechless. What a mess.

From the article:

“HISA seeks repayment from the University of Kentucky for the laboratory’s non-compliant services. Cox said university officials are in talks with HISA regarding reimbursement for any tests that were billed but were not performed. In an afternoon press conference that followed the report’s release, HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus estimated that the reimbursement would be more than $1 million.”

Whose pocket was he in?

It’s definitely implied here:

“Stanley exploited vulnerabilities in technology, governance, and oversight,” the audit review concludes. Additionally, the investigation found that Stanley potentially engaged in business and employment relationships that constitute conflicts of interests. Specifically, Stanley purposefully chose not to disclose external work, violating university rules requiring disclosure.

There really were many different kinds of dubious behaviors exhibited by Stanley. It’s clear he was unqualified morally and intellectually to be in the position that he was.

What a disaster.

just wearing a white lab coat does ensure that a person knows what they are doing is correct

My daughter who was a Chemistry major got her first job out of college to work in the quality assurance lab of a pharmaceutical drug manufacturer who made over the counter drugs.

First day in the lab the lab manger was showing her how to run a specific test. She had to stop this manager to tell her that she was not calibrating the testing equipment correctly. Daughter showed the manager how to set the equipment up as the testing equipment was identical to what she had been taught on (all of her college instructors had been PhDs, the lab equipment they used was the latest greatest and the classes only had five students so every one got hands on training…small college life)

There were other issues with tests, one was an assurance test on how a pill this company made would dissolve. After repeated tests of a production runs all of her samples failed. A company VP said she was running the tests wrong and to repeat the tests. (she asked me about what to do, I advised her to set up a video recorder to oversee the test). Strangely to her the sample passed the test this time even thought the process used was the same.

Reviewing the recording, in walks VP who picks up the test sample then proceed to agitate the test sample which was not a step of the test.

With the video she once again marked the test sample a failure.

Clanter….check your first sentence. Think you are missing a NOT. Not going to quote it and will delete this when you fix that.

There was a local human testing lab near where I live that was the official lab for drug testing, and DNA tests (paternity cases). The director / manager is in prison for 15 years. She was convicted of faking paternity and drug test results. The results of her lies were devastating. Children were taken away when false positive drug tests of parents were reported to the court. Drug test results were reported as positive or negative to employers, and to the courts when tests were never run. Paternity test results that would have led to child support payments were faked, children didn’t receive support because of this lab’s lies. There are rumors that paternity results that you paid a lot extra for, were reported as not the father, so no support was paid. Drug tests for employment were not analyzed, so the tests were falsely reported, so positives were worng, and so were negatives. The faked results were for criminal and civil cases.

The fall out from fake lab tests can be devastating to the people relying on the accuracy of the tests.

I’m wondering how many cases the UK lab investigation will change.

There was an estimate in the article. They have re-done all the tests in question.
