If anyone knows how to get in touch with someone on Team Canada pronto, I think I saw eric put his cell back in his britches pocket and think it’s illegal to ride with one. Just his luck to get gold then have some rule like that change things. Call quickly please!!!

Under USEF rules, a rider “may” be eliminated for carrying a cell phone. Not “must” be eliminated, so it’s at the judge’s discretion.
I don’t know if the FEI rule is worded the same way.

I ride w/ my cell phone in my pocket. And, er…I somehow doubt that a ringing cell phone is going to spook a horse any worse than the roaring crowds…but eh, what do I know?
As for the falling off on it…when my cell phone is in my pocket, it is at the crease where your leg comes off your stomach, in a front pocket. Not to mention, modern cell phones are pretty small.
I’ll take my chances on falling off ON the cell phone and having it to call for help over having it strapped the horse…or back at the barn.
I heard rumors that Todd Minikus actually answered his phone while on course, and still finished the jumper class. I did not see it, so it is complete, unsubstantiated rumor. My hat is off to him if he did. I have to stop or walk to answer my phone.
Yep, I agree. I wasn’t saying not to carry one, just offering an idea why they may not be allowed. :yes:
IF they aren’t allowed, and I don’t know if that is correct, it might be because you could have it set on speaker and have someone coaching you etc.
I know of someone several years ago who fell off, landed on her cell phone, and broke her back. It is a safety issue. Per the USEF rule book:
HU 118.2 No mounted exhibitor may wear or carry an electronic communication device (i.e., cellular telephone, pager, walkie talkie, etc.) while in the competetion ring.The penalty for wearing or carrying a forbidden device if observed by the judge may be elimination from the class during which the device was worn or carried.
The rule used to say “must” be eliminated, rather than “may” be eliminated, but they softened it a little to allow for some leeway.

Seriously, I do kind of find it funny about this cell phone thing. Guess he really did if someone handed it back after a different round!

Maybe his helmet is fitted with a headset and he can just say “Hello” or something to take the call (or else the laces on his reins are actually wired so all he has to do is tweak them). :lol:

I walked by Todd Minikus at Roanoke a few years back, with the cell phone in one hand, pressed to his ears, the reins in the other hand, figure-eighting over a massive vertical in an empty schooling area… repeatedly…I still remember it. Too funny.
Oh, my trainer would’ve grounded him so fast … :eek:
I once watched the local BNR lunging her HK Olympic horse at a show last year while drinking a coffee and talking on her phone. The best I can figure is that she actually does have a third arm. :eek:
