Maybe I’m crazy, but we recently switched the old lady Labradora to lamb & rice (same high quality brand she was getting before) because she was having horrible, horrible gas on the chicken and oatmeal kibble she’s been eating for ages. We had the lamb and rice for the other dog, thought we’d try it, and the gas is definitely better. But now the house smells doggy and I’m wondering if it’s the change in food. Any thoughts? My main goal in life at this point is to keep the Labradora’s tummy happy, so if I need to stock up on baking soda and wash the dog beds every week, I’ll do it.
yeah, dog odor is caused by the food. Consider switching to a grain-free food or even a raw diet. The odors are telling you the dog is not doing well on the food. Dogs don’t need either rice or oatmeal, despite the commercials. Dogs have ZERO requirement for carbohydrates in their diet, and many a person has noted that “dog odor” and dog gas mysteriously vanishes when the dog is fed something that isn’t cheap crap.
Lamb is often promoted as being good for dogs with sensitive stomachs. However, I’ve met several dogs (mine included) who didn’t do as well on it. A limited ingredient kibble can be helpful for narrowing down food sensitivities.
At this point, every time I buy a bag of dog food I wonder if she’ll be alive to finish it (and raw meat in this vegetarian household is anathema). I was wondering if there was something about lamb specifically that causes the doggy smell. She does seem brighter overall and much happier not having the horrible gas, so I will just do laundry a little more often for the time that remains.
