Mare has a large cyst at the base of her uterus. After very good cycles, had no luck getting her in foal this season. Any experience with this? Any experience with pregnancy and a large cyst (success or complications)? The cyst is very large and vet assumes this is why we could not get her in foal. Also, any recommendations for the best repro vet in FL? I am willing to travel just about anywhere if it means a pregnancy.
I am not in FL, but I guess my question is: have you tried any treatment at all? Has mare had previous foals? How large is the cyst?
There is a repro equine hospital in Tallahassee
FL is HUGE. Where are you located?
I will say Dr. Corey Miller is one of the best. He is located in Ocala at Equine Medical Center of Ocala

No treatments, mare has had a few foals. Cyst is approx. 15-20mm? Not entirely sure… About the size of a 16 day post-ov pregnancy (got excited watching the screen when we went to check in foal and was tricked by the cyst at a first passing glance each time)?
This mare has been to Miller before for frozen and I do intend to get his opinion again as season approaches. He was/is amazing. Just wondering if people had any other opinions or options.
When I worked on a good sized breeding farm we mostly used Ocala based
Peterson and Smith. Especially for difficult cases. Not sure which doctors are still there but they have a good reputation.
The mare I bought last year and am breeding next year lost the entire 2015 season because of an “anovulatory cyst.” Is this what yours is dealing with? Her prior owner had a similar experience to what you describe… Tried breeding with frozen, one vet thought they saw a pregnancy, but later thought it was an ovarian tumor (yikes!) The owner said that both diagnoses came from their general farm vet, and when she later took the mare to a repro specialist, it was correctly diagnosed as an anovulatory cyst. The prior owner Was at wits end by August of 2015 in terms of trying to get the mare in foal that year, and having lost out on a pregnancy from a single dose of frozen semen from Reputed Testimony that she had (who is now deceased), and that’s when she decided to just move on and sell the mare to me.
I asked a lot of questions during prepurchase work up (did a full repro workup with uterine biopsy, cultures and an ultrasound) and talked to a few different repro vets in my area… All said these cysts are not uncommon in teenage warm blood mares, especially ones like mine who had two foals (one from frozen, one from fresh cooled), then two years off. The mare also had some other cysts in her uterus that were indicative of mild inflamation. The vets thought the anovulatory cyst was the primary problem during the 2015 season. I was advised that sometimes they resolve in one cycle, sometimes they last the full season. 2 different vets advised trying to breed her as early as possible in 2017 was wise. Also, if I could find a stallion for fresh or live cover, that would be helpful.
All of those factors were ok for me, and what I want to do with this mare (breed to TB or a sport type Arab), so I bought her and am on track to breed early in 2017. I’m planning on live cover. If she never conceives, that’s ok too - I really enjoy riding her. But I’m pretty hopeful she will do ok with an early start to the season and live cover.
