Large metal horse art?

Not sure this is the place to post, but… hopefully. I want a large metal jumping horse preferably with rider. Do I need one? No. But I have this want. Actually I’d love a set for dressage, XC, stadium, but generic jumping horse would be dandy. Large tho, to be seen from the road that is 100’ away while hanging on the side of my house, which has a large boring road-facing side.

I suppose wooden would also fit the bill, just occurred to me.

But I can’t find anything on Google, even deep-diving into Etsy. It’s all too small or too cutsey or whimsy.

I just sent you a pm. Editing to add my retired farrier is a blacksmith artist. He can make anything… from a giant chandelier out of metal leaves to a giant buffalo. He is an artistic genius, actually.

It might be worth asking your farrier if they know anyone who does welding artwork. Lots of those types are good at that stuff or know someone who is good at that stuff.

He does make things, but it’s mostly knives and belt buckles. Not sure about him tackling this big of a project, plus I just recently dropped some chickens off at his homestead and I’d HATE to add more to his plate  That man is busy! I told him that’s why he is so damn skinny

Edited because English escaped me for a moment…

Not a suggestion but I thought you might enjoy this late Canadian sculptor who specialized in horses and cows, and has some flat metal work horses.

I think that decorative metal work is a fairly popular thing among Western cowboy artists though it tends to be smaller just to sell for tourists. Sometimes made out of old saws etc. You might need to give some reference photos for English jumpers though!

I know a metal sculptor who does things like that. The big down side is that a piece of his work will likely cost as much as a real horse.

Do you want two-dimensional for hanging, or three-dimensional for free standing display?

Try these folks. [https://www.iheartmetalart.com/]

Colin made me a wonderful plant hanger with an image of my particular breed of dog. He didn’t have my breed in his catalog but we discussed several silhouette options, I picked one, and he forged it. He also does dog yard signs and address signs and I assume he could do a horse design for you.

The dog design he did for me is now part of his catalog:

I chose a scroll design for my piece:

Two dimensional for hanging on the side of my house. I have a big bare area that will be perfect for some additional …flair

I am pretty sure you would be able to have whatever you want cut out of metal with a CNC machine or plasma cam table.

If you have a college nearby with a welding or fabrication program, they could do it for you I would bet. For cheap too!

On the same train of thought as @Kinda_Kooky brought up so brilliantly, lots of school now have that type of equipment for their STEM programs. Ask around.

Should you ever wish to populate your yard with the 3D’s, this is the place to go. They have big metal dinosaurs, too.

Now, I know this is far far away from you, but it would be an easy load for a horse hauler. :joy:

My Dad made one when I was a kid… out of old horse shoes. I drew the picture on pavement in chalk. He welded the horse shoes together appropriately. It didn’t take long. Good project for someone needing welding experience.
I gave it away to a friend 15 years ago now.

When I had my 2D piece made, I had a local welder (neighbor) do it. Several folks here pointed out that high schools sometimes have welding in shop class, so that’s a good pointer.

I think you’re on Whidbey Island? There’s an art school there, you could call them and ask if they have metalworking students, maybe someone needs a project. Or they might know an artist who could do the work.

Whenever you get your art, be sure to post pics!

Welsh Terrier. This one isn’t mine - mine is a pretty nice specimen, but this gal is one of the best ever.
