Awesome!
Incredible!
Wow!!! Even though I’ve followed along from the beginning, I am just stunned at what an incredible job you have done here every time you post an update. That little mare is so lucky to have had you as a caretaker for this healing process. So, so well done.
Astonishingly good job.
Lucky, lucky mare.
This’ll probably be the final update on little Ms. Dolly, but we just put the first ride on her yesterday! She is now 2 years old, the injury is about 7 months old, and she barely has a scar on her hip. She’s still pretty wooly so it might be there just hidden by her winter coat but I am BEYOND amazed with her. I was ponying her around saddled on a trail ride and she was so good and sensible, I slid onto her from my older horse and then had the real cowboys step on from there! She did SO well, she crossed water and bridges and was very very brave. We even went belly deep in a stock tank with her (I filled my boots with water because my horse found the drop off lmao). She might get another ride or two here and there but she won’t really start any work until late summer.
I wanted to put this up in case anyone goes through something similar and might be feeling discouraged about how long recovery might take and what the outcome could look like. There were a lot of setbacks but now you’d never know she had this happen to her unless you really looked at her. Time will tell if she is going to struggle with the bit of muscle she is missing on that side, but with the right work I truly don’t think it will bother her one bit. If you’d have told me last year she’d have come this far…I don’t think I would have believed you!

What a great update!!!
Thank you for sharing this journey with us.
You did such an amazing job taking care of this wound.
this thread will always be one available to those who need vital support for what may be thought catastrophic. Thank you for sharing your journey and good luck with your little friend.
Go, Dolly! What a good girl she is. And you did a phenomenal job with that wound. I’ve seen some gnarly stuff in my day, and I was still shocked at that thing when I first saw pictures. Whew! It just goes to show what can be achieved with diligence and excellent care.
Absolutely. I referred my sister to it after her elderly standardbred gelding ripped his hip open in a very similar (but less severe) manner — it was later discovered on a “hay hoop“ in his run-in shed. (That frame has since been relocated to sit higher.) She was very relieved to see how well Dolly had healed up, and in fact, a few months later, Stanley also now has a scar smaller than the casual observer would ever have expected.
@redcowpony Brava!
Thanks for the update.
Ms Dolly is one heckuva Good Girl!
& You are the Best.Woundfixer.EVER!
I always love a happy ending to a horse story.
Thank you for sharing how well Dolly has done. You did a great job, and will definitely serve as an inspiration to others who may end up with a horse that gets a nasty wound.
Wow wow and WOW!!! It is so hard to believe something that ugly and big heeled up to almost nothing. You did a great job and it sounds like Dolly was a great patient. Well on her way to a life of being a good girl!
Well done! Thank you for sharing your and your horse’s story.
