Large open wound on unhandled yearling FINAL UPDATE POST 145!

Holy moly, the support from you guys is incredible and I can’t thank you all enough. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I will keep popping back in with updates from time to time. Little Dolly will spend a lot of time eating and growing up over winter, terrorizing her siblings. And you all are right, she has quite the leg up on her groundwork! If she didn’t have such an easy and tractable personality…this would have had a much different outcome. I thank her every day for that.

I can’t believe how good it looks. I bet the scar will be minimal.

It looks so good now.

We had a horse who was healing well with a wound on his neck. Once it starts to heal it gets itchy.

He rubbed on a brick wall, which meant he ended up with a dent in his neck, so keep an eye out for that.

Wow! That looks fantastic! Well done!

Another update for Dolly! She is doing fabulously, we are SO CLOSE to being healed up! She also got to go on an adventure the other day, and was VERY excited at first but was so good through it all. We opened gates and went through ditches and over logs, such fun with a young one. I can’t blame her for acting silly at first, she has been in a stall for weeks and she was used to acres of pasture before. I am amazed at how much mobility she has, and how nicely this looks to have healed.

I know she lost a few muscles on that side, so I am hoping that she is young enough to be able to compensate and will never miss what’s gone. She is just about healed enough to be turned out with other horses in a large paddock, which will get her moving more and hopefully help reduce scar tissue under the skin and build some of that muscle up again.

holy cow what a GOOD GIRL!! She looks to be taking even strides with her hind legs, so that’s an excellent sign she will be just fine

Amazing!! She is going to be an awesome horse, if only due to all that groundwork! Wish my four year old was that sane…

Okay, Dolly, I see you out there being all grown and stuff! Go ahead, girl!

She seriously looks fabulous. I bet she’s going to be one awesome horse! A true credit to your dedication and care!

I used to have a client who was a breeder, with too many horses.
The youngsters sometimes didn’t get diddly in terms of handling until they got injured.
We’d jokingly refer to it as “the X Farm training protocol”.

what an incredible journey and lesson for us all. Many people would have looked at that wound and said no way. You now have a horse that has sensible and trusting nature. Thank you for sharing this journey, it has been very educational

Hey guys!! Here’s how she’s looking now! We did have another rather large abscess pop up just recently, I am HOPING that will be the last of it as it was low low on her stifle/gaskin area (you can see the drain hole near the bottom of the picture). I am a little worried though, because I can FEEL some of the older abscessed/scarred area and it butted right up to it, so there is a chance it might have been some leftover of that.

Other than that and a relatively minor hoof abscess which is being dealt with as we speak, she is doing fabulously and is enjoying her time hanging out with her older siblings. If I can, I’d like to find a pasture for her over the winter to get her moving some more and build a bit of muscle, you can tell she is missing some muscle/tissue through that hip. There is a real chance that she might not make a performance horse because of it, but only time will tell!
