Large single hive? Maybe?

My gelding came in two days ago with a large hive maybe, VERY prone to them, that was in the shape of a pear. It was hot. Couldn’t find a wound mark or anything that would give me a cause to what created it. Remi breaks out in hives usually after a good rain and roll. He reacted to it initially but the more I messed with it he was less reactive. He is a reactive horse so thinking it didn’t bother him. So we put a DMSO mix on it and turned him out. Next day the “hive” moved down into what was the bottom shape of the pear making a large circle. Non reactive, no heat.

Anyone ever seen one like this?

Not sure what it looks like today, but the BO hasn’t sent me any photo so may not exist but I know it didn’t get worse…

Hermatoma, from a kick or a big bite or whacking himself on something. Don’t think that’s a hive at all. It’s dropping because gravity is pulling the fluid down. May take some time, but it’ll go away on it’s own eventually.

Agree - looks and sounds like a hematoma from a kick or bite or ran into something, or a bite from a particularly nasty and big fly. A cold pack would be the best thing for it, and even then it will likely continue to “sag” as it starts dissipating.

Thanks, that was also in the back of my head but thought maybe it would feel more fluidy? Its soft but not like ones Ive seen in the chest areas of other horses! Not overly worried just had never seen it before.

We also have REALLY bad horse flies this year, worst year ever, so possible it could be those too…

Could be that or a sting or a poke by a plant he is allergic to. Could shoot him with some dex and see if goes down, but wouldn’t be too too worried as you said.

Looks to me like an insect bite? IME a hematoma from a kick or blow that is that large, will show some skin damage or a hoof print. Maybe a wasp bite or an unusual insect, something that doesn’t bite him every day? Fortunately!

Didn’t look at the picture, but my guy has had a few of what you’re describing. We think he’s hyper sensitive to certain types of insects. He had one bite that covered his entire stomach  and had to be on steroids for a week. If it’s not big enough to warrant getting the vet out, I’ve had really good luck with a witch hazel/ colloidal oat meal bath, followed by equal parts hydrocortisone cream, baby eczema cream (the kind with oatmeal), and hemmroid cream (be sure it has pramoxine in it, 1% or more!) Good luck, and if you go the magic cream route be prepared for weird looks at target when you buy the ingredients, a 5 lb bag of apples, and a value size pack of wet cat food, lol!

That’s what happens to my horse when she gets bitten by those “bomber” or “B52” flies. No wonder they flip out when they see them.
