So at end of June, my horse came in from turnout in our front pasture with a swollen hock. Not really warm and definitely not sore. No ruffled hair or other marks. Thought maybe it was a bad reaction to bug bite (he’s a TB and very sensitive to bugs). Hosed and administered Bute after discussion with vet. Swelling went down except for a little fluid left in dip on side of hock. Vet wasn’t concerned as she felt it was just swelling in tendon sheath and nothing to really worry about since he wasn’t lame.
Then I went into labour on July 1 and didn’t get back home again until July 7. Sometime during that period, he developed a huge hideous thoroughpin. Looks like a golf ball on side of hock. Finally made it into vet yesterday for X-ray and everything looks good bone wise. Vet is going to consult with specialist from larger center to get his opinion if there’s anything to do for cosmetic purposes. If he suggests draining and injecting, we will ultrasound at that point.
Just wondering if anyone has had success treating thoroughpin and what was done. I love horse and don’t plan to sell but never know what life might hold. I’d be happy if we could get filling down to flush with side of leg rather than the current lump!
