Last day of Saratoga on FS2 lol afternoon, including the Hopefull

If you want to see next years Derby colts making their debuts or very early in their careers as 2 year olds, this is your day. Some other Maiden and NW races too.

If yesterday was any indication, there will be some surprises and the gate crew will be busy…two fillies got out from under their jocks trying to load into the gate in the same race. One was retrieved after a chase other one made it all the way back to her stall, including jumping the outside rail. Unhurt.

In another race, a highly regarded filly by AP demonstrated she favored the fact she’s chestnut mare more then then her daddy’s laid back temperament depositing Irad O in the dirt but she didn’t go anywhere, wasn’t hurt and Irad walked out of a pretty bad limp from getting stepped on…hope he’s up to riding in every race .today. NY automatically scratches these but they have to get them off the track, when they can catch them . By the time the Spinnaway went off, post time was almost a full 30 mins behind.

Gotta love the babies, tho none of these three fillies was a first timer but maybe they debuted to a sparser, quierter crowd.

Intersting that DWL is on a bit of a streak, win by a really nice filly and starts an AP son today, couple of other APs expected to start.

Enjoy.

Or TVG  (ie, not just FS2).

Let’s see, no racing at Gulfstream Park - they canceled yesterday and today a few days ago at the behest of Dorian

The 2 fillies that escaped prior to the gate opening were at Saratoga IIRC, on turf. TVG commentators made some interesting comments when the second filly did her ‘I’m free, I’m free’ rendition

Not sure which race or horse Irad was on yesterday where he came off, before or after the gate opened (but I might have missed something comparing entries vs restyles. ) Or it wasn’t Irad

Today, pickings are slim with Saratoga, Monmouth and Del Mar being the only big name tracks racing with Gulfstream cancelled.

Saratoga has the Bernard Baruch Handicap, Race 9, and the Runhappy Hopeful Stakes, Race 10. Today is Saratoga’s last day of the 2019 summer meet :frowning: And, lastly, Saratoga appears to be rainy today

Nothing big on the Monmouth card.

Del Mar has the Runhappy Del Mar Futurity, Race 9. Today is also the last day of the summer 2019 meet :frowning:

Hopefully the horse that fell in the last is OK.

I’m still lame from walking 5 miles a day in sandals for 2 weekends in a row, but thankfully I don’t get tested.

Unfortunately not if the Footnotes on Equibase are correct.

BOROUGH BOY hustled from the gate, showed the way three to four wide under light coaxing, swung four wide into upper stretch displaced from command, dug in under a drive and took a bad step near the eighth pole, fell heavily and unfortunately had to be euthanized on track.

Very strange Runhappy Del Mar Futurity. Odds on favorite Eight Rings, #2, spooked to the inside just after coming out of the gate… appeared to be before the opening (they started from the chute). Drayden Van Dyke came off as did Flavien Pratt on the #1 Storm the Court. Both horses appeared to be fine… Storm the Court caught by an outrider at the quarter pole, Eight Rings crossed the finish line.

Flavien Pratt is ok. Drayden Van Dyke has been take to the hospital; moving all extremities and, IIRC, complaining of pain in one hand.

Followed by Garth, the second favorite tossed the anchor out going around the far turn. Objection by Ginobili against Nucky (the winner), no changes. Both Nucky and Wrecking Crew (who finished 2nd) went off at the longest odds on the board.

Hope DVD is ok.

Someone needs to track the filly down that jumped the rail and give her a career over jumps!

one of the 2 fillies that escaped during loading in the 7th race was Osaka Girl with Johnny V not in the irons. Believe she’s the one that repotedly tried out for the Hunters. Didn’t get the second fugitives name but the camera was on the announcers with that one zipping by first one way, then the other, then back again in the distance behind their heads. It was kind of funny, nothing injured but some egos.

In race 8, MSW on the dirt, Orsay, Chestnut filly by AP sent out by Chad Brown, dumped Irad Ortiz and stepped on him before entering the gate. She just counts as another scratch. Don’t know if anybody tracks horses that get to the gate but never into it as anything but a scratch.

Poor Borough Boy was running well, tired and dropped back into traffic then suddenly collapsed sort of splaying behind and sitting down before going over on his side dropping the jock behind him instead of sending him off over the front end. No warning, poor guy hit hard and had the wind knocked out of him but walked off with a little help. Far as the poor horse, that was a weird one…wonder what gave way…? Saw one go like that years ago that turned out to be a cardiac event… Also hope nobody had a claim in on him.

On the plus side must have watched 60 or 70 races this summer without incident. Sad way to wrap.

So how many horses died at the Saratoga meet? One website said over a dozen. What happened to the horse who collapsed in the stretch a day or two before Borough Boy?

If one wishes to believe PETA, 13 at Saratoga including Borough Boy.

PETA does not choose, IMO for obvious reasons, to differentiate between training and racing fatalities. Since it is unclear if there are 13 racing or just “13 fatalities” hard to know without clarification which were training and which were racing.

Tossing out a number and making it sound gruesome usually appears to work for PETA :frowning:

Can’t quickly find anything else that reflects fatalities through the close of the meet.

Interesting verbiage at the top of this web page (which I typically don’t frequent PETA in any way shape or form).

Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way.

So, PETA would not like me ultimately because my Border Terriers are used for my entertainment at times when we go to a Scent Work trial and play

Why don’t you check NYRA’s database?

IMO, not the easiest database to find or use.

It would appear that the number 13 includes racing and training plus one that was classified as ‘not racing’ @ Rood & Riddle (vs track or training track).
No links to read more about the fatality, just that it happened.

Which website? Some anti-racing groups will count any death from the time the Oklahoma Track opened in the spring as a fatality for the meet. Also they will count deaths from colic or any other illness as a racing fatality. Be wary of your sources.
