I wonder if anyone has dealt with or knows about anything similar to what I’m seeing with one of mine? Is this possible: A hind suspensory injury that shows no initial heat or edema, causes no lameness, and then blows up after 11 days of minimal movement (box rest/hand grazing)?
Honestly devastated to have brought in my six year old mare for groundwork and found that once tested, my lunging surface (which I’ve now had “fixed” four times for issues I stupidly thought resolved) still wasn’t fit for purpose. It would have been a pretty innocuous event if the footing didn’t ride so deep: Walk to spook, then buck, a few steps of canter, and several more bucks. The episode maybe lasted 30-45 seconds as it was clear she was going too deep and I was afraid to put more torque on her legs spinning her inside.
There was no swelling or obvious discomfort for the next 3-4 days but we kept her hand walking only just in case. Day 5 I found heat and swelling inside her cannon bone on a front leg, possibly the body of the suspensory? Our vet came out the next day and felt she was sensitive there to palpitation. Didn’t react to being flexed or show any lameness, though she was very fresh for the trot so it’s possibly this masked it.
That examination was five days ago, so it’s now been five days since she was trotted on a hard circle for the vet and 11 days since the lunging incident. She’s only been out to hand graze since the vet’s visit, so very minimal movement pending our scan for the front suspensory this week. I was shocked to find her this morning with one hind fetlock noticeably swollen. She’s not at all defensive about my touching it and I would love to think it’s stocking up from less movement, but it’s only the one fetlock and seems more localized. So yeah, can the edema from a ligament injury come this late? I’ve never experienced this
