I have two Dobermans… I just noticed one has a lateral gait at the walk and the other a diagonal gait.
Curious am I … What does your dog do? and breed please …

My border collie has a pace (legs on one side moving together) gait in between his walk and trot.
Many dogs, especially larger breeds will pace. It’s considered a “lazy” gait and can be indicative of muscular-skeleto problems such as hip dysplasia. Often as dogs age, they will begin to pace instead of a diagonal walk or trot. There are a couple of breeds where pacing is the normal gait.
Herding dogs often pace and it is considered natural and also okay when working as it is an efficient way of moving.

Both Beagles, present one and former [RIP] paced or walked, randomly it appears
Lab jogs. Everywhere. Except when she’s sleeping which is most of the time.
I have a mini aussie and she has lateral movement at all gaits. I call her Peppy Lapue as she kind of bounces when she is running. She has been like this since I got her as a puppy. She is in very good fitness and no apparent problems, just how she moves.
I’ll have to look. I know that my bitch rarely walks; and it’s very difficult (read: impossible) to gait her in a walk - learned this when I had her at the chiro. It was rather funny, but the chiro wasn’t concerned. We just trotted her instead.
Not sure my 4 year old ever slows down to a walk unless he’s dreading something – for example, at bath time he walks very slowly.
Just asking - those above that are talking about pacing – do you mean a pace at the “walk” or a pace instead of a trot? I know most dogs will pace on occasion (some more than others) instead of a diagonal trot, but I’ve never noticed it at the walk.
Going to go observe…
My german shepherd, pit bull and black mouth cur tracks diagonally. I just checked lol never occured to me before!
in the case of my Beagles, pace, at walk
I was just thinking about this yesterday. My puppy paces at 5 months old. I hope it doesn’t mean future issues. She has long legs and huge paws. She seems well balanced and growing evenly - all over all at once - lol!
10 mo pit mix puppy does both. Some opinions are that they sometimes outgrow the pacing as they get more coordinated. I am not sure pacing is a problem, unless an older dog starts doing it (like our older dog did as her arthritis got worse).
For my Cavaliers, a pace is their gait between a walk and a trot. Go slow and they have a square walk. Speed up enough and it is a pure trot. In-between gets you a pacy gait.
My large male Dobie does both, sometimes a lateral trot, or a diagonal trot. It seems to depend on how fast he’s going.
The smaller female dobie only does a diagonal trot.
Walk for both, is a normal walk.
