Latest Rio Conditions- Athletes and Tourists beware

I am one of those people who love to watch the Olympics. Say what you might about their current state, but I still love that every two years, we get to watch the worlds best for two weeks. I have watched since I was a kid, and that nostalgia has lived on to my adult years.

That being said, I’m really worried about what’s going to happen in Rio. These articles just came out regarding the current state of things in Rio and I am seriously anxious to even watch some these structures being put to the test on television with thousands of people at stake. While USEF posted photos of the horses and athletes arriving safely and hacking out on social media, I am starting to think that Horses probably have it better then their human counterparts! God help those who have to even touch any of the water in the bay!

But don’t worry too much as one offical said…

“the music will be great and the food will be delicious”

worries me that glanders is present in Brazil… hope the controls are good enough when horses move to wherever after leaving there!!

Heard on the radio this morning that two horses were euthanized.

Re the glanders and horses euthanized. I also saw this, apparently the deaths were back in 2015, and there is some information that there is not even a good testing process to verify Glanders. I think this has gotten blown out of proportion somewhat.

I think the horses will be fine, but the water situation sounds completely gross.
Also the horses will be quarantined the whole time they are there.

Reading up this morning on EN, the facilities are apparently VERY good, with large stalls. The temps are in the 70s, and the grass is terrific. So far. so good… fingers crossed…

Yes the Glanders was last year, not new, and I definitely think the horses have it better then their human counterparts for the most part! Excited for it to begin!

Aren’t the Olympics every 4 years?

Summer and winter I think. Don’t they alternate ?

Yes but we don’t see any equestrian events in winter so isn’t 4 years…

But she didn’t mention equestrian in OPs first paragraph - just that she liked watching the Olympics and seeing the worlds best compete

Maybe, she meant that you can see the best compete, every two years, because WEG falls in that category? Olympics, then WEG, equals seeing the best every two years.

Pretty sure she meant watching Olympic sports in general every 2 years, not just horse sports. Many find it fun to watch something closer to the whole idea of sporting competition and being the best one can be then marquee names and big money athletes.

Also fun to watch less popular and rarely televised sports you never see any other time and appreciate the sacrifice those athletes make in obscurity. Air rifle anyone? We got a gold there.

They started alternating them after the 92’ games IIRC. Before that you had winter and summer games both in the same year, which was great, but then nothing for another four years. I like this way better, every two years there is an Olympics.
