Lavender Illegal in which form?

So I wasn’t aware that lavender was on the USEF banned substance list. We sell a fly spray that uses lavender essential oils and they’ve come out with a shampoo we were thinking of picking up too. Would topicals like this be illegal to use and how far out from a show would you need to cease use?

I think I answered my own question. Found this statement from USEF about Absorbine product.

If they can pick it up in a test it’s illegal the statement below from the USEF basically says nothing other then they neither approve of, or disapprove of .

As a result of that review, USEF provided the following statement regarding the use of Absorbine Botanicals during competition: “Some ingredients in Absorbine Botanicals Massage Foam and Absorbine Botanicals Body Rinse Concentrate are forbidden under the USEF Drugs & Medications Rule; however, provided the products containing these substances are administered only topically and as recommended by the manufacturer, there is no need for restricting their use during competitions under USEF rules. However, if these products are used inappropriately, e.g., in a manner other than topically, this could result in a positive finding in the blood or urine of the horse, which would be a potential violation of the rules.” This statement is meant as a guideline for exhibitors questioning whether the product can be used during competition; it does not imply an endorsement or approval from USEF.

why is lavender illegal in the first place?

Possibly classified as a calming agent? That’s my guess.

I believe the makers of Sore No More products had the same issue/question. My understanding was that the lavender in Sore No More topicals will not test and that many other common liniment ingredients also won’t test when used as intended as a topical product. An exception to this would be capscaisin in liniments or other topicals, which can be absorbed and detected on a drug test if used within 7 days of competition.

When lavender used as a wash or topically is illegal things have definitely gone off the deep end.

Especially considering 9 tubes of Perfect Prep is legal, but heaven forbid your horse smells like lavender!

Eh, they put it in tea too as a calmative. Probably like the can of beer for sweating- there’s no problem with a trace of alcohol, there is with knowing if it’s left over from a pint or gallons given daily as a calmative. That’s what the D&M folks told me when I asked about the beer and why some odd things are on the forbidden substance list.

Never underestimate what some people will do to their horses to beat the testers and, no doubt, actual findings inspire adding more to the list with due to those with no regard for side effects, substance interaction or horse welfare. Wonder they don’t have a Pharmacist and a Chemist on speed dial…or maybe they do…

Amen! So is Sore no More a problem? I give rub downs with that at almost every show…

Not unless you dump it down his throat or use a whole bottle, maybe with DMSO that gets it thru the skin into his bloodstream. Used as directed most of these things are not a problem, it’s the off label uses that get to be a problem. I still gave mine a beer but in the afternoon after they were done and had 16 hours or so to get rid of it.

But Im not going to tell anybody to do that and promise 100% that ingested alcohol will never show up in trace amounts any more then the D&M people told me it’s OK to do that. If it happens to show up, it would be my fault, I was warned.

i still don’t get it. what prompted this to be on the usef restricted list? seems like an odd one to me.

My only thought is that people were using it to mask something else? I’m not a chemist so I don’t know how that works lol.

If Lavender is used as an essential oil neat or can be inhaled or ingested I can see it being a problem. Having it applied topically isn’t an issue. Careful with the op’s original one however as a wash based on lavender can definitely test positive as it is inhaled and that can show up.
