A horse should never be left tied unsupervised no matter what kind of halter it is.
Interesting, showing up to defend this [edit]
Large blanket statements really help no one. (I think that was the point.)
I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I am riding I have to stop and pee, so I tied my horse (appropriately) and do that, or I have to go to the registration desk at a show while my horse munches hay at the trailer. Technically my horse is tied unsupervised in both those situations.
I do not think either of those make me (or others like me) a bad horse owner.
On the actual thread topic - It is sad that this trainer is still out there handling horses.
I would think the norm would be at show when you have to run out to pee etc there are other people around them to see the horse should he get in trouble. I don’t know how long it takes you to pee, but it doesn’t take me very long. I can run over to the port a John or into my trailer or into my stall and take care of business fairly quickly. I don’t think that was the case here in this situation at all. This horse was tied and left for a very extended period of time as punishment. That’s not appropriate ever I don’t care who it is.
You did not say in this situation, you said a horse should never be left tied unattended.
I agree, how this horse was handled was VERY wrong.
Oh dear sweet lord. Get some flea shampoo for those nits you’re picking.
The problem with tying a horse in a rope halter that doesn’t break and leaving it unsupervised, is that you won’t be around to use that pocket knife if the horse gets into trouble.
Its not the tying that’s the problem. My friends barrel horses stand tied all night to her trailer, unsupervised, in rope halters at a race, it’s no big deal. English disciplines are the ones who don’t think Pookie can be left alone for a minute unsupervised while tied. … This despicable woman on the other hand tied this horse HIGH & TIGHT as punishment then left!
This got shared to my regional horse group on fb, which I then screenshotted and promptly sent to DH who is in Aiken the next 2 weeks training.
This is disgusting.
I am not defending this disgusting person AT ALL. But leaving a horse tied in a normal fashion is not cruel. I did breed shows as a teen. We generally had 5 with us, and they spent give or take 8 hours either showing or tied. Including a foal every year, to no ill effect. They had hay nets and water, and were perfectly fine. They were not closely supervised, either, although there was enough activity nearby that someone would see if something happened.
Zippering flame suit now.
I did a breed circult for a while, and left, one reason being this kind of tying. They literally called it “hanging the horses”. They wanted the horses neck so stiff that all the horse would want to do it hold it low for their under saddle classes. Disgusting.
I read enough unsettling stuff in the daily news. I don’t want to read all these comments, so please don’t tell me there are people defending this. It is not just “tying”.
This^^^ over and over. It’s not.
Edited to add what happened to the horse who was tied out of anger is not tying. I don’t know about breed shows as referenced above.
I am not talking about “this kind of tying” I am talking, literally, about a nice safe loop in the lead rope. Not long enough that they could get a foot over it, but not restraining their heads at ALL. Just normal horses tied to the outside of the trailer. No doubt they were bored, but in no other way was this harmful. And, as they learned it at ~6 months, none of them were fretful.
my understanding from reading the article and another I saw linked on FB is that the horse wouldn’t get in the trailer so they left it home, tied in the stall, alone for several hours with no one checking on him, while the trainer left with other horses and went to a horse show. Very different from standing tied at a horse show for several hours with their friends, haynets and people in the general vicinity all day.
One account I read said he broke his jaw and severed his spinal cord fighting against the halter/tying.
Yes, I was responding to some comments that a horse can never be left tied for any reason. I think that is ridiculous.
You do realize this is someone who advertises herself as a jumper trainer right? Not a breed show person. Regardless of who does it, it’s disgusting.
I think the operative word was “unsupervised”.
I have no issue with leaving a horse tied in a normal fashion with a leather halter but I’d never tie one with a rope halter (or any other halter that won’t break.)
Of course this woman was tying the horses head high as punishment, which a totally different thing and is despicable. I hope her name is known in the area so that people can keep their horses away from her.
She does barrel racing and polo now too, apparently. She does a lot of yee haw, go fast disciplines these days I guess. She used to be exclusively h/j but not as much anymore.
Very late to the party but what she has done is horrific. I hope no one sends their horses to her.
Yeah imagine all the day show folks that tie to their trailers when not in a class, or endurance riders that stay overnight at the race, or cowboys and cowgirls that tie to trailers or fence when working livestock on the open range, and on and on.
