Lead rope suggestions (I want a LONG one)

I dislike square lunge ropes (dunno why I just don’t, don’t really have a real good reason, they just don’t feel as nice in my hand) and the rounded ones I have found have been:

A. Extremely cheap to where they start to fall apart immediately and get tangled in themselves constantly, which makes me worried when lunging my horse

B. Extremely fancy with leather tassels on the end and therefore expensive

C. Parelli/Anderson/etc branded and therefore VERY EXPENSIVE

Why is it so hard to just find a rounded lunge rope :frowning:

If anyone has any suggestions they are welcome!

There are places you can buy custom lengths of rope. Find the rope you want, get it cut to the right length, get it home and add a snap.

How long?

Here’s a 10’ cotton for $4.99:

And some other color options for $6.95, also 10’:

Second just make it yourself. Then you get exactly what you want

I saw those but they look a lot like the cheapie ones I already have, and they aren’t quiiiiiite long enough for lunging/ground driving (okay not long enough for lunging at all) which is really what I want them for. I’m really looking for like 14-15’. The cheapie ones scare me with the frequency they tangle >.> I also HAAATE how they feel in my hands (too squishy) and they tend to get caught in surcingle rings if I’m long lining/ground driving which is extremely annoying for both me and the horse. I have to keep stopping and loosening everything which isn’t very effective. Even while lunging they just feel ick.

I suppose I COULD get yacht rope in any length/color I wanted, you’re right…how does one go about adding a snap?

You can get the clamp dealies online or at the feed store. SUPER simple to make - loop the rope through the snap ring, squeeze the clamp tight with pliers - and viola!

Oooh, you have introduced me to a VERY dangerous thing…

Brb, making 500 lead ropes…my tack locker is going to be a mess…

I could probably make halters this way too…

yep, they sell the brass clamps, clips and all the things you need to make a lunge line or a lead rope at the hardware store.

In my experience, you can buy “pre made” for less than all of the supplies - but for your very specific requirements, it might be your best bet.

And as for WHY long, round lunge lines are not common - personally I don’t like them because its a lot of bulk to hold in your hand, and if you get rope narrow enough that it isn’t bulky - then you have a much smaller surface area to hold, and are more likely to get rope burns etc.

My favorite longe line looks like this one:

It’s a soft plaited cotton. I didn’t expect to like it AT ALL but it’s got enough heft to handle easily but not so much to get in the way. Has lasted a bunch of years…10, maybe, at this point? And still going.

Half Circle Ranch. She has every length and thickness. I bought her “feather weight” 22 foot lines to use for ground driving, and they are awesome. She also made me cross ties and several halters.

If you don’t see what you want, she’ll do custom work or sell you the rope and hardware.

Try Sunset Halters- they made awesome products that last forever and you can specify length

My coach buys rope at a marine store and makes them herself by adding a snap. She likes her lunge lines to be slightly heavier than normal lunge lines. I use the same flat nylon lunge line that I bought USED from another kid in 1977!

The problem with using yacht rope for a full-on longe line is that it’s so heavy. Some people like that, some people don’t. I like my 14’ yacht line, but if I actually want to longe I have a nice flat cotton line. I’m not sure exactly what they call it other than just cotton, but it feels much nice than nylon.

Jeffer’s has quite a few options for cheaper than a “real” rope tack site, I was just browsing there the other day. One’s a 15’ with a popper and an eye for cheap but it’s backordered for a couple weeks.

My Rope will customize what ever you want. Wide variety of colors and choice of snaps. I have a lead rope that I have used for about 13 years and it looks great. Brass snap still works great.

Handcrafted Jewels. Scroll down to lunge lines and driving lines.

I’ve ordered from her for years. Great service and quality and very reasonably priced.

myrope.com as Wayne noted. They will do whatever you want and you can get them personalized. VERY high quality.

Weaver makes a cotton round lunge line. Think cotton round lead rope, but lunge line length.
