Leadline-what should handler wear??

I am planning on taking my 3 yr old daughter to her first rated show to do leadline. In the past my trainer has always lead her and trainer has been in breeches and tall boots. I am taking her by myself this weekend and not quite sure what I am supposed to wear. I won’t be showing so I won’t already be in riding attire. It is an “a” rated show but the turnout for leadline is usually pretty low. Can someone please let me know what is the appropriate attire for me to wear? Would really like to avoid wearing a dress. I wanted to wear khakis but trainer said that wasn’t acceptable??

I can’t imagine why khakis wouldn’t be acceptable! I took my niece, she’s 5, in her first lead line at a rated show a few weeks ago. I had burgundy breeches with a black sun shirt and black running shoes. I wasn’t showing that day and getting her (my retired) horse ready, and her on I needed to be wearing dark clothes!

There was a mix of what people wore in our class, some people dressed like me, some who had been showing in proper show attire, some people in jeans.

Unless it is one of the shows with over the top leadline classes (Devon, Upperville, etc.) I think khakis and a nice polo or button down shirt would be fine.

When I had leadliners, I wore clean khakis, paddock boots, a polo shirt and a hat - usually straw. People who were also showing wore riding clothes. Some people do the over the top, garden party clothes at the bigger shows and I have always found it faintly ridiculous - I can’t imagine wearing clothes like that around horses, you just KNOW you’re going to get slimed.

Google image search “Devon horse show leadline” and you’ll get an idea.

Ask your trainer why she thinks khakis aren’t acceptable. I guess you could wear dress pants, loafers and a jacket, but I don’t see the point of non-barn clothes at the barn. I have enough trouble keeping my good clothes out of the barn as is.

Can you look at the show photos from last year to see what others wore at the same show/venue? If it is a series maybe you can look up the ones from earlier in the year?

Khakis are totally acceptable. Safe, sensible shoes are an excellent idea, especially if the leadliners might be asked to trot. Any accessory that might cause a distraction is a bad idea, such as a big hat that might blow away.

The focus of the class should be the horse and the child. Not the handler.

It really doesn’t matter, as long as its not some crazy clown outfit that might scare the ponies or ripped up clothing. We see people in riding clothes, jeans, and shorts at A shows leading lead line.
