Lease registration?

Apologies in advance if this has already been answered, but I’ve been poking through the USEF website/rule book for a while now and am not quite sure what to do.

I’m currently leasing a horse and would like to register the lease with USEF. In the FAQ, USEF says I can submit a copy of the signed lease agreement OR a notarized lease registration form. The thing is, the horse has a horse recording ID w/ USEF, but the person listed as the owner is actually the underage daughter of the person I entered into the lease with. Will USEF accept the lease/form if it’s in the mother’s name? And if I choose to submit a signed lease agreement as mentioned in the FAQ instead of the lease registration form, does the lease agreement need to be notarized?

I mainly want to register the lease because the horse is going to be listed under my ownership with our local HJA since they recognize lessees as owners, and I hate to have inconsistent info between organizations. FWIW I’m only showing in adult medals and some non-nominated jumper sections, though all at rated shows.

TIA for the help!

Call USEF and ask them what documentation they need. Really, shouldn’t take long, they are pretty good with answers on stuff like this. Many horses are recorded in the name of minors, adults sign on their behalf or co sign when contracts are finalized

But you do realize you don’t have an enforceable contract with a minor don’t you? Have her mom sign your contract…not for USEF, for your benefit should things go south with the horse. And YES on getting the lease agreement notarized, same reason- protects both sides and routine in just about every other business.

I agree. Call USEF and ask them what to do. Sometimes the owner is listed as a minor with USEF because it is the minor child who is the USEF member and not the parent who actually owns the the horse. Under 18 at least in NY do not have capacity to sign a contract.

I registered a lease this past July. Pony is owned by a minor and her mom signed the lease. We printed the form off USEF website. I got my bank to notarize it. USEF processed it very quickly.

Hope that helps

I think she did enter into the contract/lease with the mom. The owner is the underage daughter. At least that’s how I read it. Although I agree - call USEF and ask. They are easy to get on the phone the times I have needed to get answers.

I did this last year. Mom is the one who signs. I had another lease several years ago. Kid aged out that Dec. Lease was with the Mom, kid recorded owner and the USEF made me get “kid” to sign.
