Hi, not sure if the picture attached. My young warmblood keeps getting these scrapes/dings on mostly his inside left hind.
I thought it was from his turnout boots, but I now think he’s hitting himself in the stall at night. He’s shod on all four.
I’ve only had him a few months, was unshod when I bought him, and didn’t have them.
Anyone ever see this type of dings? I keep them clean, dry and put stuff on them, but they never really heal or get worse.
Thanks for any ideas and or advice.
Maybe when he lays down he touches his leg with the other hoof? And maybe nails/horseshoe scratch the skin. What kind of bedding do you use? Maybe you can wrap the leg at night? Or use a sock just to protect the skin
Is it just hair missing or are the spots open? The four little diagonal lines on the inside look like they could easily come from a shoe. No idea on the one on the back of leg.
You say “keeps getting” - are they always in the same spot? Anything on the other hind? Or front?
Echoing the above post, I would try wrapping for a while just to see if that makes a difference. Ask your farrier next time if he thinks its a shoe. I have a gray horse who shows pink skin/no hair in a couple places(like behind his ears) But he came that way, likely tack rubs, and never change. Your horse’s leg doesnt look like that. Weird
those dont look typical of wear spots a horse might get when they are sleeping in a certain position.
I would consider stop putting any kind of dressing on them, they are not open or infected.
I would consider stop using the turn out boots. There might be something about the way they fit that they are twisting and wringing on his leg. The pattern of the marks looks like a twisting pattern with pressure across the back of the leg
The white skin is a complicator since it can often be sensitive . Stop using soap on your TO boots if you do so. I would not use soap on the leg , either.
If it does not clear up talk to your
Check the shoes for any rough area he could be hitting on.
I put hind bell boots on my horses the first time they get hind shoes or the first time after they’ve been pulled for a while just to make sure the first time the roll, etc. the don’t forget about the shoes and clunk their legs.
