Legend Injections...How long before you notice a difference?

Hi all!

Vet recommended putting my almost 17H OTTB on Legends. We just gave him his first dose last night and for now will be on a 6 week schedule. He was on Pentosan Gold but we felt this would be better for him and hopefully prolong the time between hock injections and time between his acuunture/chiro work.

I’m new to the Legends shot so how long before I would notice a difference?

We have seen results after a week or two. However, I will say that we switched to now only using conquer gel. We actually had better results overall and found it to be more cost effective. I would have never said that oral joint supplements could be more effective but after trying it on some of our horses I was blown away.

Why Legend over Adequan?

I would give it a week or two.

I have heard several vets recommend Legend for TBs, not Adequan or Pentosan. I have also heard that Adequan works better for Quarter Horses than it does for TB’s or WB’s. My friend’s Selle Francais has been on Legend for years and is doing great. He had some serious lameness issues a while back, and Legend seemed to work best for him. The vet suggested it for my OTTB, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I am trying something from SmartPak that comes with a money back guarantee first.

Good luck!

My experience with Legend, with two horses as my sample, is that it takes effect very quickly. I can tell a difference within 24 hours, sometimes less.

For me, I do not find it to be a substitute for regular chiropractic checks. I don’t do any hock injections, so can’t comment on that.

The improvement I observe in my horses is “all over.” It feels as if all of their parts are moving more freely. And, as I said, it happens almost immediately.

I agree with Huntin Pony. And per my vet it stays in their system for about four days and then the body has metabolized it and it is gone. I only use it for that reason before a horse show. So if I plan to show Friday through Sunday he gets Legend on Thursday. My horse is a thoroughbred and I have had luck with Adequan as well.

You will likely see results in about 24 hours and those results peak at 48 hours, then taper off, based on reports from my vets. And you will only see results if there is some pain/discomfort/stiffness at the outset.

Big name QH trainers use adequan as maintenance. They use Legend right before and during big shows because it works fast.

My chiropractic vet prescribed Legend for my horse this year who was showing some discomfort in his stifles at the height of the show season/summer. She indicated that she normally prescribes Legend for horses with stifle symptoms/issues and Adequan for horses with hock symptoms/issues.

Her recommendation was to give it 3 days out from a competition. After using it a few times, I think 2 days (or maybe less) would have probably been better, as a previous poster said. It does work quickly and I could normally feel the effects the very next day.

As far as how long the effects last, I found that I would feel a notable difference in my horse for at least a week. Overall he would feel looser, lighter on his feet and more relaxed throughout his entire body. The greatest improvement would be in the first few days post injection. As the Legend wore off, he would show more tension due to discomfort.

If it works for your horse, the results can be really amazing and worth the price per dose.

Its been a while since I used it - but - I noticed right away.
I think my Vet gave my horse an injection once a wk. for 3 wks and then another in a month - but can’t remember if thats exactly right.
I do know that I thought my ottb did much better after that. That is all I had to use.

You may not see any difference, there have been many studies on hyaluronic acid injections (such as Legend) that show no statistically significant change. There are a handful that do, however. So it seems a bit of a hit and miss treatment in that you may see a difference in a week or two (if you follow the instructions of your vet and ride lightly and handwalk) or you might see nothing.
