Legend or Adequan?

I have an older horse who is fully retired and is pasture sound but I want to keep her joints happy and comfortable. I’ve been doing monthly legend shots, but I’m not comfortable giving IV shots myself and it’s getting tricky to get the shot given around the same time each month without making an entire appointment just for one shot. I’d usually try to add on to another appointment when the vet was at the barn, but the timing is difficult. I’m considering switching to Adequan so that I can get away from the whole IV shot entirely, but I’m wondering if Legend is more effective. Can Adequan be given monthly?

Thanks!

Adequan can be given monthly, although most people seem to have transitioned to giving the loading dose once or twice a year instead.

If the IM injections are less of a hassle for you, go ahead and try Adequan monthly and see how he does!

No legend experience here but I’ve done adequan/pentosan with great results. Though we did it just during show season when he was working harder. Definitely worth switching and doing a trial as the IM is super easy, and you maybe can switch to the semiannual loading dose protocol for an even easier maintenance schedule, especially since yours is retired!

It is my understanding that Legend works on the joint space where Adequan targets the cartilage around the joint space. I have used both with success but before starting on just a monthly shot, I’d suspect you would have to do the loading dose for it to work its best.

My guy was on Legend while he was still in work. Switched to Adequan after his retirement so I could give them myself. (Just like you, decades of horse ownership, but never comfortable with giving IV). He did great on the 7 doses twice a year until he passed - bucking, rearing and galloping with no soundness issues until the end.

As suggested, why not try the Adequan and see if it keeps him as comfortable as the Legend.

Some great points here:
