Legend v. Lubrisyn

Considering buying a horse who gets Legend monthly. Given the cost of a farm call (and I have no one to share it with), that gets expensive fast. Am wondering if a high quality oral supplement like Lubrisyn might be a reasonable alternative. Thoughts?

Why does a shot of Legend require a farm call? If you get your vet to teach you how to give an IV injection, you’d cut the cost considerably.

That said, I’ve seen very good results from Lubrisyn. Not quite as dramatic as Legend, but I’m happy with it as a daily supplement, along with monthly Adequan. I save Legend for right before big shows, since its effects are so short-lived.

Why does the horse need Legend? Have x-rays showed arthritic changes? Is it being given as a preventative? Does every horse at that barn get it “just in case”?

If the horse already has joint damage (which usually if you are at the injection stage it does) then you are not going to get good results with a supplement. Joint supplements are mainly to prevent issues in the future, not help current problems. (There’s of course some exceptions, MSM can sometimes be helpful for joint pain)

I’d try adequan if you aren’t comfortable with IV injection.

This is the SM you are considering? I would try Adequan before using Legend. I used Legend on my SM and honestly saw no help. Anyway, for a feed-thru, I am finding the Gut-X product to be good for my mare. I do think it helps. It’s a pretty good dose of HA. I also started using Uckele’s Devils Claw Plus and I think it’s helping. (she has Kissing Spine issues).

We really need to know why he’s getting Legend, and why monthly. Xray-proven arthritis? Where, what joint, how bad?

Prevention? Entirely different story

Why Legend and not Adequan? USUALLY, Legend is used before an event, like a show or hard ride, as a boost, and Adequan is used for longer-term support.

Lubrisyn does use the right kind of HA and yes, HA has been proven to increase joint health

I’ve tried both Legend and Hyaluronex (another liquid HA supplement) on my horse. I noticed zero change with Legend but huge changes with Hyaluronex. Is it SUPPOSED to be that way? Probably not. Voices of the internet and the powers that be say injectables are heavier hitting than a feedthru supplement. That’s probably the case most of the time, so I guess my horse is just a medical mystery.

I will say the Hyaluronex has some other anti inflammatory ingredients, it’s not just liquid HA on its own. Also I think the Hyaluronex has a higher amount of HA + other stuff per serving than Lubrisyn.

We’ve had really good luck in the past with Lubrisyn for our (now passed) QH gelding. He went from not picking up one of his leads to picking up both easily and doing lead changes within a week. Both are good products, the only trick is you have to keep them inside. If they get too hot or too cold, the product will be ruined.

Yes, this was in regard to the SM I tried. Unfortunately, going to pass after all.
