Recently named to the USEF Developing Riders list, Lehua Custer is a USDF bronze, silver, and gold medal rider. She has completed the USDF “L” judges’ program with distinction and has received educational grants from The Dressage Foundation. Author of “Success Through Precise Riding” (Dressage Today, August 2018), Custer is a wonderful trainer for horses and riders at all levels with experience bringing green horses all the way to Grand Prix.

A native of Hawaii, Lehua grew up riding whatever horses she could find, including a frisky Appaloosa named Thunder who only had one lead! As a college graduation gift, Lehua’s mother paid for a riding lesson with two-time Olympian and founder of Dressage on the West Coast, Hilda Gurney. After Lehua’s very first lesson, Hilda offered her a job at Keenridge Farms as her Assistant Trainer – and Lehua was hooked! She spent the following 9 1⁄2 years working, training and learning from Hilda.

Custer started her own dressage training business at the LA Equestrian Center in 2010. She has experience starting many young horses and has trained a number to Grand Prix. In addition to Hilda Gurney, Lehua has ridden and/or done clinics with Judy Harvey, Johann Hinnemann, Robert Dover, Carl Hester, Charlotte Dujardin, and Debbie McDonald, among others.
