Leroidesanimaux Mare "Guanabara Gal" at Bowie Auction

In about 4 weeks, the Vet will be back for booster shots & routine dental work for both our girls.

The below was also from Vet in a different email:

To gain weight, Bonnie and Honey should both be offered high quality 1st cut grass hay, approx 20 lbs/day (weigh the hay you get; the weight varies from cut to cut and field to field). You can continue to offer soaked alfalfa cubes for the additional calories, and feed 1-2 lbs of sweet feed twice daily (if not already feeding this, slowly work up to this amount over two weeks to avoid stomach upset or diarrhea). Both horses (and especially Bonnie because of her cribbing) will benefit from things to keep them busy in their stalls, like slow-feed hay nets, salt licks, and stall snacks/toys. Encourage natural foraging by turning them out in the round pen with hay distributed around the pen by the flake to encourage them to walk and “graze.” We’ll plan on floating both mares’ teeth when we booster their 5-way vaccines in 3-4 weeks (approx $150-175/horse). Once they’re settled in and start gaining weight, ground and lunge work can be great to start gaining topline muscle.

That all sounds like really, really good news!

In light of the fact that ZG has burned the mouths of a LOT of horses, and the fact that there may be encysted strongyles as well, Quest Plus is the better option

I wouldn’t read anything into the “very slightly anemic” value either, as I suspect the blood was drawn from resting horses

Why limit to 20lb, for horses who need to gain weight and who likely ideally weigh more than 1000lb?

Hey @DaveYGunN how are the girls ( both horse and human) doing?

Hello all! All 3 girls (1 human & 2 :racehorse:) are doing great! Thanks for asking. The Vet is coming again today for the next round of booster shots, dental work, fecal screen to make sure the dewormer did its job, & probably other stuff I am forgetting. :grinning:

Our TB “Bonnie” loves to lay in the sun and roll in the mud. Ugh! Haha too cute!

Hi everyone! We celebrated Bonnie’s sweet 16th birthday yesterday. My daughter baked her a horse friendly “cake”, we had decorations, sang Happy Birthday to her, and had a toast with a sip of apple juice! She may have thought we were crazy, but she didn’t seem to mind all the extra treats & attention. Both her and Honey are still doing great! My daughter bought Bonnie a new leather halter with her own earned money as well. What a great day that we had so it was probably time for me to post an update.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there (including our Bonnie!)

Awwwww. That’s lovely. Broodmares that are past their mid teens are so vulnerable when they land at auctions. I’m so glad to see the care and love your sweet Bonnie is receiving.

Blessed are the broodmares.

I’m a latecomer to this thread, but love a good Glowup & Happy Landing story.
It sure looks like you’re doing everything right for these mares.
Keep us posted as you & your sweet kid get to know these mares & what they can do.
Though, sometimes just being huggable is enuff :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I love this and it makes me very happy to see your daughter doting on these beautiful horses. Congratulations, and well done!

Very happy to hear this. Leather halters are much safer since they will break in an emergency if the horse gets caught up on something.

What a wonderful idea for a party. It looks like a good time was had by all!!

Howdy all. We were on vacation at the Grand Canyon and Arizona, Zion Park in Utah. I’m lucky to have a neighbor who is a state trooper and who grew up around horses so he was able to watch the girls for us while we were on vacation which was a lifesaver.

This past week we had a visit from the Farrier and the girls got their normally scheduled trim.

They are staying turned out 24/7 right now and we have a nice sun shelter for them. They are fed twice a day, one full bale of second cut hay between the two of them plus a fair amount of sweet feed, high fat grain by Bluebonnet, and an additional vitamin supplement.

Our smaller quarter pony, honey, is starting to fill out nicely, but with our TB Bonnie, it’s taking longer because she’s obviously more tall and lean, and we don’t want to do too much too quickly.

All in all they are doing amazingly. We have yet to saddle Bonnie and ride her but my daughter rides honey frequently. I have got on Bonnie bareback before and she didn’t seem to mind it whatsoever but until she looks a little less skinny, I just don’t feel, right about saddling her up. Who knows maybe if I did it would help her build some muscle and fill out but right now we just pony them behind the side-by-side through some of our pastures, to get some exercise.

I also invested in some white fly sheets with neck covers because the flies are pretty bad in western Pennsylvania at this time of year and this sweltering heat. Bonnie, the TB loves water so I normally purge the hose of any hot water and then cool her down after her morning feeding and she seems to love this ritual. She runs over and nudges the hose if I’m filling up the water trough until I spray her legs down and then she just stands there while I continue to work my way up her body with the water. Honey is the complete opposite and that has to do with spraying whether it’s water or fly spray.
