My new Morgan is a chunky boy, built in a way that makes you worry about IR developing and of course, laminitis. His regular diet is being managed, but I would like to be able to feed him treats (and he would definitely like to have them!) I imagine mints are as sugary as sugar cubes. I know carrots have sugar, but would carrot chunks be appropriate for a horse that does not have IR now? What other pocket-sized treats do you use?
Check out “Herballs” from Hilton Herbs. My chunky Connemaras think they’re delicious and it gives them nice minty breath!
Standlee makes a flavored mini hay cube treat. Hay cubes themselves work well. Almonds are another low sugar option that horses like and they are pocket friendly.
Celery stalks. All mine love them.
Google “sugar free or low sugar horse treats” and you’ll find lots of packaged options.
peanuts are also great.
My borderline chunky Morgan and his barnmates are very, very happy with their/my discovery of NuZu stabul 1 nuggets (less than 10% sugar). I am also giving scant handfuls of the Stabul 1 feed (also less than 10% sugar) as the occasional treat, and the horses are crazy about it.
I bought a huge bag of Buckeye’s low sugar peppermint crunchy treats. My horse hates them; he’ll either dramatically spit it out or just let it fall from his lips. Brat.
Peanuts and celery were the carrot substitute for my IR/EMS horse.
Uckele makes sugar free treats in three flavors.
I give the Buckeye no sugar added apple treats to my IR mini. They are very small but I only give him three a day. He eats them happily, but then he’ll eat just about anything.
Ditto Herballs and Celery!!!
I break up alfalfa cubes and feed them as a treat. My boy loves them.
Why would you give treats to a horse that is already fat? Makes so sense whatsoever if he is prone to laminitis and developing a metabolic disorder. I’m sure he “likes” being fed treats, but I think he’ll “like” being sound and healthy better.
My horse enjoys a kind word, a rub and a pat for a job well done. No sugar, no weight gain.
Not one of mine believe that celery is edible. I have tried more than once.
I tried peanuts too and none were impressed.
The Smartpak line of treats have no added sugar.
I buy the sugar-free peppermints for Louie… He has Cushions.
I have been buying Omega Fields 65% less sugar cookies in shape of a heart for 3 years now. My guy has cushings and is an easy keeper. https://www.omegafields.com/equine-products/omega-nibblers-low-sugar-starch.html
My horses all love the Buckeye no sugar added peppermint treats.
Enjoy Yums mint or carrot.
