Lesson Barns near Philly?

Hey all, did some searching through old threads but most of them seemed to focused more on boarding and training. I’m moving to Philadelphia later this spring and hoping once I get settled to start lessoning, possibly even progressing to half/full leasing if money/time allows.

I’ll be doing research at UPenn and was planning on living in the University City area, so anywhere within an hour of that that has lesson horses would be awesome. I’m specifically interested in jumpers but I understand the limitations with lesson horses, so would love to have access to half-leases. I’d be open to the eventer side of things as well.

Or if you have other recommendations about where to live or look for barns, I’m happy for any suggestions that make pony time possible. Thanks!

There’s Ashford Farm

http://www.ashfordfarm.com/

Lot’s of lesson horses and staff.

In the city limits Northwester and Chamonix do lessons. I believe both do “hunter jumper” lessons and Chamonix also does polo. Likely neither will come close to satisfying you if you were at all competitive/skilled. I believe if you part board a horse at Monastery someone can come in and teach. I don’t know any details. All 3 of these places, in terms of lessons/facilities are very basic type programs, from what I understand. Someone who has shown and/or really wants to progress in a substantive way will likely not be happy. IIRC these are all 3 very basic plop around, trail ride, maybe super super low level boots’n’chaps type show clientele. For someone who ever actually rode jumpers, I don’t suspect these will work.

There are better places in Chester County, Bucks County, Delaware, and South Jersey but they are not realistically 30 mins from Center City. Nothing is, unless you’re planning to go out at 2am. Anything quality in any direction will be 45 mins to an hour MINIMUM and maybe more with traffic depending on when you go. Parts of South Jersey are likely the quickest commute, though Ashford isn’t far. When I was a kid I recall Ashford being a good program but I have no connections to it as an adult. Woodedge, over the bridge in Moorestown, does lessons and has a pretty nice cadre of adult jumper riders and might be a good fit. Laurie J. is somewhere and her mom has a place in DE that you might look into.

You might find out where Penn’s eq team rides. I used to know but now I forget and it might be another good barn to try.

How tough are you? University City doesn’t bother me but I’m tough. Parts can be pretty shady but parts are also full of students and fine. Just make sure you’re in one of the good areas.

You can also live virtually anywhere on the el or Broad street line and take SEPTA to University City easily/cheaply/in a flash so unless you have a real desire to walk to campus there’s no reason to limit yourself to University City.

I’m definitely planning on at least an hour, especially from right downtown. I’m coming from Michigan so I don’t know the suburbs well enough to know the public transportation options, I was planning on living downtown to get the hang of things without worrying about getting to work and then possibly branching out from there. Hoping to make a trip out once my start date is more solid to do some exploring of all my housing options.

I’ve done the low adults at A/AAs for the past few years and am pretty comfortable around 3’, but I’m expecting to be on 2’6" limit schoolies until I prove myself or find a half lease. The goal would be to get to the 3’6" level but I need to figure out if I’ll have the time for it outside of lab.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I will definitely check all of them out. The eq team barn is a good idea, I’ll do some research!

You might want to try CourtesyStables.org. They have a lesson program, offer full and part leases and are, believe it or not, within the city limits but have direct access to miles and miles of trails.

Do they do jumpers?!

Northwestern Stables has a show team that shows at AHS shows - hunter not jumper classes. They have a decent indoor ring and lessons are in late afternoon/evenings. I believe they have horses for half lease.

I’m not sure how far it would be for you, but for my money, Two Bit Farm which I believe is in Boyertown…would be an excellent place.

Two Bit is hella hella HELLA far from Center City Philadelphia. Hour and a half during off-peak, no traffic times. I don’t even want to think about the commute during trafficy times.

I grew up in that area. I would recommend living in the suburbs and commuting in for work if you’re going to ride more than once or twice a week. Where I lived in Willow Grove it was a 30min train ride on septa to Penn and only 20 min to the barn from the house. Septa is pretty realiable and runs every half hour. More often if you live closer in and can pick from multiple trains. I’m a big fan of not driving in the city.

Thanks for all the tips so far. Definitely seems like I should be looking at finding a place outside the city. I’ve found a bus that stops right by the hospitals so I might look into the northwest suburbs a bit. Thanks again!

Even if you stay in the city limits, unless you want to walk there’s no specific reason to limit yourself to University City. SEPTA covers the whole city in one way or another (but El and BSL are your best bets, likely).

Legacy Farm in Telford PA has nice and suitable lesson and lease horses for jumpers 2’6" and up

Thanks everyone, definitely some food for thought and good options to check out. I appreciate it!

I’m not much help on the Hunter/Jumper stuff, but I work in University City and live in Media. I’m not too far from the barn, and an easy SEPTA train ride right to University City. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any specific questions!

I live in Merion, commute into Center City every day, and ride up in Harleysville. It can be tough to get out of the city and to any location where there are show-type barns, but it can be done. Feel free to p.m. me too if you are looking for any specific info - and welcome to Philly!

I can’t help you with lesson barns but I can encourage you to engage in a relationship with Stephen Starr.

Check out Timber Edge in Horsham – http://www.timberedgefarm.net/staff.html – They have a lesson program and lease horses in addition to boarders –
