Lessons in Columbus, OH?

I recently found out I’ll be moving to Columbus next year for grad school at OSU.
I’d like to keep lessoning once a week at least, and maybe pick up a partial lease after my first semester if possible

Recommendations for a good advanced beginner lesson barn or trainers in the area?

Ideally:

  • Less than 45 minute drive from campus (hour at the most, I am not a big fan of driving)
  • With an indoor or a plan to enable riding through the winter
  • Friendly and low pressure for someone who doesn’t have goals to compete at rated shows or even at all while in school.
  • lesson horseS: Since I’ll be riding less frequently in school, I’d love to use this as an opportunity to experience riding different horses. Lease mare has been pretty much my only ride for more than half the time I’ve been riding, and I’d love to gain more tact and feel on horses with different preferences and personalities.

Columbus has a big range of barns, lots of show barns. You might want to check out where the hunt seat team trains out of, I believe they’re out of Sid Griffith’s place. They should have plentiful school horses to ride accordingly and I don’t think he’s too far from campus. Might give you a bit of a peer group in the other students as well. All the other barns I know are show barns so I’ll let others comment if they know some other choices.

Jamie Mills @ Empress Valley. Best H/J trainer in the area.

second Jamie!
I rode with her for awhile when I lived in OH, and she’s great.

Lindsey Yinger is also amazing, but it’s more of a $$$ program, where most students own/lease horses and show frequently.

OSU’s hunt seat team does ride out of Sid Griffith Equestrian Center in Hilliard, about 20-30 minutes from campus depending on traffic. I rode with the team for four year of undergrad and loved it. If you would want to show that is 100% possible but if not, that is also totally fine. They have a good variety of horses to use in lessons, an indoor and outdoor arena and are really a nice program that is low-key if you want it to be and more competitive if you are there for the showing aspect.

Thanks so much for the recommendations!
Both sound like great options for me

https://bookmarkfarms.com/ In Pataskala - about 30 minutes from campus. Highly recommended.

Bookmark is fairly well regarded and a good place to at least start out and one of the few places with multiple trainers to serve clients with different needs at different levels. And they have lots of school horses . You can always move after you get settled and explore the area. As just a lesson rider, you can try both barns and see what suits you best with no complications of moving a horse.

Suggest you try both before deciding. There are others but most are heavily show oriented and do not maintain a diversified and large enough school string to allow riders to learn and advance in a timely fashion, Time is on your side, don’t rush.
