Lessons near Pomona CA?

Since the search brings up mostly threads about boarding in this area or is not H/J related, I figured I would ask…

I recently moved to Pomona for vet school and I am trying to find someplace to take hunter lessons. I’ve been riding in San Juan Capistrano for the past month or so but the hour and a half of sitting in traffic is killing me so I’d like to find someplace closer - Chino Hills, Norco, etc. It doesn’t need to be super fancy but I’d like a decent place that goes to some of the smaller rateds or nicer local shows (do they have those around here? I’m not from the area).

I tried contacting Rainbow Canyon Ranch several times through email and phone but they never responded.

The Orange County and LA County Shows are nice and the former has an awesome championship show.

Places in Chino Hills that go to county shows or higher-level ones:

Patty Foltz-McCarty at Rancho de Felicidad (several of your fellow vet students board at RDF) - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Echo-Ridge-Show-Jumping/244355882303934 (regular website not ready for prime time). Use my name if you call.

Ron Kennedy and Ryan Pedigo at their facility

Kristie Kurtze at Diamond I

The jumper trainer at Hillcrest is leaving at the end of October. I don’t know what level of showing the trainer that is staying (Danyelle McKee) does.

If you want to check show records, go to Horseshowtime.com, click on Search, select trainer and enter the trainer name in the format LN,FN.

I have boarded at Coyote Creek (now Red Bucket), Hillcrest, Diamond I, and now Rancho de Felicidad.

Feel free to PM me.

Thanks! I may go with RDF as long as their prices are reasonable, they are literally 5 minutes from my apartment and you are not the first person who has recommended them. Do you know if they offer leasing there?

Yes. I am currently leasing a horse from Patty. If you contact her try calling as opposed to email.

Danyelle McKee (Enriched Equestrian) relocated to a private place in Glendora. Its a private historic place with box stalls as well as 12x48 in and out runs, plus large lit arena and access to trails. Its private and peaceful. Best of all its is insanely affordable (box stalls start at $370) since the place has been around so long and isn’t strapped by having to pay a heavy morgatge and really isn’t trying to “make money.” The horses there are fed well and are happy.
Enriched Equestrian accommodates local through rated shows and Danyelle McKee has experience with collegiate shows as well.

I went to undergrad in pomona back in the 80’s and could ride from pomona to walnut to diamond bar on the canal trails from equestrian center to equestrian center and I could ride in blm land behind Mt. Sac. I don’t know whats its like now but I’ll bet there’s still lots of places. Have you tried asking at the arab barn on campus? I know they aren’t hunter/jumpers but they must know the lay of the land.

Its mostly subdivisions. There are a few enclaves but many of the trails are gone or no longer maintained. New neighbors considered them a nuisance.

The OP is at Western which is in downtown Pomona, not Cal Poly. And, yes, there are a lot more houses than DaniW remembers. I think there is still some open land near Mt Sac. I don’t know if it’s possible to ride from place to place. There might be pieces of trails left, but I doubt they connect in a safe fashion. Even in Chino Hills, which brands itself as equestrian friendly, they established a trail system too late to have it contiguous. There are lots of trails; however, ironically it’s fairly hard (you need to ride alongside and cross some pretty busy streets) to get to many of them from the most horse-dense area. In theory, I think you can ride from the Ridge Riders arena into that Pomona area as well.

There are horse facilities scattered around in Chino and Ontario, but many of the ones visible from the road don’t look like they’re used, or even kept up.

I don’t know anyone out there personally, but I had a friend who boarded at RDF while in vet school. She was very happy with the care that was provided there.
