Lethargic dog

Let me first state we already went to the ER vet yesterday.
I have a 2yo JRT…very well-behaved, but very normal JRT energy level. Sunday she stayed in her crate most of the day…not unusual when I go to work. But usually that means she is full of it all night. She wasn’t…very quiet and just didn’t look perky. But she was eating and drinking (less volume)…urinating normal, no vomit or diarrhea. Figured maybe she ate some deer poo that wasn’t sitting well…as she was chomping/licking lips a lot at night.

Monday she seemed to perk up, so I thought we were okay…was still quiet, but playing a bit. Again eating and drinking, though less volume.

Yesterday, she seemed quite lethargic again and just looked not well. So off to ER vet. They did xrays…no obstruction, though lots of fluid and gas (which she was farting some really stinky farts). Blood work was all perfect…no pancreatitis, no infection, electrolytes all good. Don’t think she got into anything strange (though she has brought me dead frogs or dead mice on occasion, so who knows…but nothing obvious).

Vet suggested a virus or gastroenteritis…basically a wait and see. They did run some subq fluids and some anti nausea meds. She seemed much perkier last night after the meds and fluids. Today, she looks better (not as good as last night) but marginally better…still just laying in her crate. She did eat some wet food and rice (food allergies so chicken is not allowed). Still pooping normal, no vomiting, no temp.

I’m just stressing over her (it’s been a rough 2 years with goodbyes to older dogs and horses). She is not exposed to other dogs recently, so no chance of getting something that way. We have another older JRT who seems fine…he eats the same food/treats.

I’ve been really sick with flu-like URTI the past two weeks…but I know that we aren’t supposed to be able to transmit bugs between species.

Anyone experience a similar GI like illness, but with no vomit/diarrhea? Viral with no sick contacts? Vet said to just observe and if not improving in 3-4 days to come back. Thanks…even if you just tell me to chill out and let it run it’s course and that she’ll be fine!

Jingles & AO for your JR ~

Keep monitoring closely like you’re doing ~

((hugs)) for your worried heart ~

  • I understand your level of stress after your losses during the last few years ~

My latest JRTx is a sensitive flower in the GI department. Nothing but problems ranging from small to Big Deal with him since puberty. Finally I just had it and started cooking for him. No more problems. He will be turning 4 soon and I’ve been cooking for him for 16months. Seems drastic, sort of, but I was at my wits end with this dog’s GI issues so it’s been well worth it.

edit the Amish farmer I bought him from warned me at the time “don’t feed him your fancy city folk dog food or you will have nothing but problems” which of course I smiled and nodded at and then completely ignored once I got home. He sent me home with a small bag of “garbage” dog food that I used to transition to a high end puppy kibble and then threw away the remainder. But his warning rings in my ears ever since. I still wonder…
