Let's talk about flies

I would love to Lyons Show Jumper but in 30 years of keeping horses at home and running professional stables, I have never taken a picture of my manure piles! I moved to a city :frowning: And I am currently down to one retired horse boarded at a facility that is surrounded by vineyards. The owner of the barn is paid for the privilege of hauling the manure away before we can do anything interesting with it! I have been fantasizing about having an actual manure pile that I can care for and add worms to. The resultant dirt is like black gold and would be incredible in my teeny urban garden. The owner at the facility I am at gave me permission to use and maintain stinky traps to help with the flies. She uses predators and I order more of them to supplement her predators. I have been looking at bat houses and thought I would give her one as a present. Anyone buy or build a bat house they love?

I know this is probably more about stable flies… I use the white sticky tape across the rafters of the run-in, the flies land on it and get stuck and DIE! We have cows across the street, it is a losing battle.

But if you have biting flies, the Horse Pal is amazing. I am buying another this year. It gets the giant horse flies and the smaller green ones. http://www.bitingflies.com/

Bats and bluebirds are both wonderful insect eaters - I love seeing both hunting at dusk! They devour enormous quantities, which we certainly have in the Carolinas. I work closely with one of our bat biologists and am always trying to bribe her to bring the Anabat to the farm so I can name mine, lol.

A healthy insect-eating bat colony is not a threat to your horses. I applaud their munching of disease-carrying insects - especially since even though my horses are vaccinated against West Nile, there is no human vaccine, so munch away!

You made me look up reviews – and made me buy 2. My black horses (and others) will thank you.

I’m considering bats and fly predators. I’ve been wondering, will bats eat the fly predators? I had it easy last year. I brought 3 horses home in August. I’m going to have to up my game this year.
