Levamisole

Hi All,
Curious if anybody"s horse has had any change in behavior while taking levamisole.
Thanks for any info.

Hi
OP here. I got no response to my original inquiry, so I assumed that no one has had a horse who has experienced undesirable side effects from levamisole
I am asking again. Any experiences with undesirable side effects from a horse on levamisole?
Thank you

What is it for and what side effects are you seeing in your horse from taking it?

3rd time taking drug
Every time horse more agitated than normal
Horse relaxes to normal between treatments
This time horse obviously agitated after first dose. We had “weather” that day. Gave 2nd dose, next day horse irritable, particularly to touch.
Possible polyneuritis

Nope. We used it ti treat epm along with oragen. Behavior got better. Her only symptoms were hypersensitivity to touch and some tightroping behind. If you’re using it to epm, I’d treat for ulcers. There is some research indicating a connection between epm and the nerves that control acid production. Mine had to be treated for hindgut and foregut ulcers twice despite living what is considered an ideal lifestyle to not have ulcers.

I have heard that some horses get worse before they get better due to the inflammation around the nerve endings and the dying off of the protazoen.

Thank you
Treated for ulcers. Reoccurence has crossed my mind. However, does not really explain why horse seems to have this change while on drug and immediately relax as soon as it is removed.
I have not been able to find ANY info to support what I am observing But i am not imagining it. It could be idiosyncratic to this horse, I guess

You might find your answer on the facebook group EPM Horse Support. Lots of experience in that group.

He may just be allergic to the drug. Talk to your vet about options. My vet uses Pathogenes for our drugs. They are very knowledgeble.

My (late) horse Music was on Levamasole as an immune stimuant for chronic Lyme disease. She never had any side effects or changes in behavior. She lived to age 34.

Thanks Janet for your reply. Your experience seems to be the prevailing one. I am going to reexplore reoccurence of ulcers.
