Liability Insurance as a Boarder

I’ve never boarded anywhere that didn’t ask for proof of liability insurance.

The quality of the facility has absolutely nothing to do with it. If my horse kicks out your car window while going down the drive for a hack, why the heck should the BO’s insurance have to cover that?

Ok, thank you! Someone had (probably incorrectly) told me that some carriers will drop you if they know you own a horse. I’ll give them a call now. Thanks again for the guidance!
No, that’s correct, some carriers, in some places, certainly will; there are buckets of threads here about it. (For example http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/showthread.php?399539-Denied-homeowner-s-insurance-due-to-owning-a-horse )

Personally, my homeowner’s policy covers it, no policy rider required.

This is a common requirement at many boarding barns in Ontario, though not usually strictly enforced. You get liability insurance with an OEF membership, so it’s very cheap.

Thanks for the link! A bit new to the board and will spend some time investigating the search feature…

Homeowner’s policy covers me, but I took out a liability policy one year after having an issue with a “neighbor” who did not know the meaning of boundaries (and I am being polite)
Policy was about $150 ish and I slept better.
Guy was obnoxious. Just had to say it.

Might want to check policy limits to see if paying for a higher payout umbrella makes more sense…

I pay $150/year for private horse owners insurance for my mare through Corinthian (agent). In this sue-happy country you are crazy not to have some type of liability coverage - it’s peace of mind having it. Scroll to the bottom in the link below:

this thread prompted me to email my insurance agent and ask about liability coverage for my horses. i’m waiting to hear back more but he asked: how many? where are they? who rides?
interesting…

The USEF insurance used to be part of your membership, now you have to purchase it separately.
Yes, that started in 2015. The cost is $25 for a $1 million liability policy.
I have a million dollar liability policy for my 5 horses and it runs me about $350 a year.
could you perhaps reference who you have your policy through? i was just quoted $600/year for 2 horses with no clarification of how much coverage that is for.

I had 1m liability for about 150 thru Markel.

Check with your homeowners insurance (if you have it) first. Sometimes it is covered without an extra rider (I have over $1 mill coverage just under my normal homeowners, no extra). I have never had liability insurance required by the barn, but I will never voluntarily go without it. Too many things can happen with unpredictable creatures like horses and too many stupid people knowing nothing about horses can do idiotic things that result in their injury and, through no fault of your own, your liability.

I got for a horse I was having shipped, shippers were picky about damage so thought it better safe than sorry. Liability for 1 horse for 1 year was around $150, don’t remember who I got it thru. Honestly, not a bad thing to have should your horse damage something or kick another horse etc.

Just wanted to add that I also had a policy through Corinthian and they were fantastic to deal with and had competitive prices. Mine was not required by the barn but it made me feel better to be covered.

For the North Carolina COTH ers … The NC Horse Council offers a $million excess / primary liability policy for the grand price of … $45 per year (Jan to Dec) as part of their membership.

This price beats any commercial policy in the state… I have it.

I never thought about carrying liability insurance on my own horse … but after reading this thread, I am looking into it.

Homeowners or rental typically does not cover if you show, even locally. I would check there first and get endorsement if possible. If not, Markel Insurance is great- $250 for $1.5M aggregate limits. I feel it’s good to have the protection specific for equines as homeowners ins may try to find ways out of paying a claim.

When I took out an umbrella policy, the insurance company insisted that I take out an equine liability policy. I think I pay $150 per year for it.

That’s too much.

Why would you pay $350 for a $1 million liability policy that you could get for $80 (USEF membership + $25 for the policy underwritten by Lloyd’s of London)?

that’s what i thought too. i asked for specifics as to why the policy would cost me so much and my agent solely responded with “call me to discuss”. rolls eyes i think i’ll be going with another insurance agency for the horses specifically.
